I know this is not code and potentially dangerous but want to understand the theory.

What is the danger is wiring an outlet using the black (line hot) lead and using the ground lead instead of a white (nuetral) lead?

Is whatever the danger is lessened by also using the ground lead to ground the outlet?

You might know how you wired the outlet (it might even work??). BUT the safety code of practice exists to standardize all electrical installations so that the next maintenance guy that visits your premises leaves your house alive.

unbalanced current can flow on the ground wire. the nuetral is a conductor (the only grounded conductor) there should never be voltage or current on the ground conductor under properly functioning circuits.
