When 2 creatures damage each other, that damage is assigned at the same time. Your guy hits his for 2, and he hits yours for 2. The toughness of each creature determines if it lives or dies. If a creature receives damage equal to or greater than its toughness, it will die. You took one more than your toughness, he took equal to his toughness, so you both die.
