Do Yorkies tend to smell like a dog?  I know this seems like an odd question, as they are dogs, but I know that different breeds tend to smell more than others (for instance, a friend had a miniature schnauzer that smelled horribly even right after a bath, I have a chihuahua that never smells remotely dog-like).  Thank you.

If you bathe the yorkie regularly, it will actually smell quite pleasant.  I give my yorkie a bath once a week, and he smells like baby powder, or whatever shampoo i use through the week.  The only time he smelled "doggy" was when i brought him home from the pet store.

No..and the reason they dont smell like a dog is because they have hair, not fur, like other dogs. They dont have undercoats like other dogs, which is why they get cold very easyly. You should only bathe a yorkie twice a month because otherwise their skin will dry out and they get dandruff (just like we do if we wash to often). They dont have a doggy smell at all, infact they have a pleasant smell which I like, and it doesnt shed, like other dogs fur does,so they are overall very clean dogs.

I don't find my dog to smell "doggy" at all.  BE VERY careful washing your yorkie though - my vet recommended no more than once a month for baths.  Use a shampoo meant for dogs and dilute it a fair amount and be sure to rinse it really well.  Yorkies can be prone to skin problems and overbathing is a major cause of dandruff.  I overbathed mine and he had to use a special conditioner and eat fish oil with his food to fix his coat (it became very lacklustre)

I first have to correct the uninformed answer provided by Chelsea pertaining to hair and fur.

There is no difference between hair and fur.

Secondly, not all problems associated with the "smell" of a dog directly relates to their type of coat.
Dental, anal glands, ear infections  may all be the etiology of a dog's smell. This does not mention metabolic disorders or diet.

To say that one breed smells less "doggy" than another may simply be a function of something other than the more obvious coat variation.

I have had my yorkie for a few months now, and I really enjoy him though often he "stinks" for lack of a better word. I've heard people say to wash him once a week, once or twice a month so I don't know what to do. The vet says every week. I don't know if there is a special shampoo that I can use, but it seems that an hour after he has a bath, he stinks all over again. I have a pom and she doesn't smell at all.
