If your shih tzu is anything like my (overly spoiled) shih tzu, the other dog will not be accepted. Mine tends to like bigger dogs. His best friend is my sister's pit bull. He doesn't care much for small dogs. He gets very, very jealous and protective of his mommy & daddy around them.

I don't have a answer, and i couldn't figure out how to ask a question. But I have a 5 month old shih-tzu and just recently got a 6 wk old shih-tzu.  My 5mnth, does not harm the puppy in anyway, but she will not play with the puppy, or play with me as much either. Will she grow out of this in the weeks to come?

I rescued my first shih tzu and a month later decided to give  him a friend.I rescued a smaller female-we introduce them on neutral ground -not our home- and they were indifferent to each other,Then I brought her home and sat them and hand  fed them -always giving preference to the first one,and giving love  and  praise to both.I never make the first one feel less than the smaller female. She accepted his friendship after two weeks, the first two weeks he would approach her but she ignored him.Now they are  best friends. He never feels  threatened by her but he is just a bit jealous.I always handfeed them, when they are begging  for treats, they are  happy  to  receive them at  the  same  time  too. Food  is  a  great  incentive! Also always  keep  the  first  dog happy by giving him first  place, the other dog won't mind and will accept its place in the  household. The female wanted to be alpha at  first, but she quickly changed her mind when she saw I'm alpha!

these are a different kind of doggie. they have moods. she's watching this new pup to see how things are, because she was number one before he came. he's stealing her time and she is playing like she couldn't care less. she does though. she's still young so she'll adapt easier than if she was the only one for a few years. just make sure you give her equal time.
