Makedonians were exclusively a Christian Orthodox people, as were the Albanians, Serbs and Bulgars prior to the Muslim invasion. Despite attempts to ethnically cleanse the region and also modern anti-religious communistic governments in some of the states that comprise Geographical Makedonia. Today the original Greek Makethonoi maintain this link to the pre-muslim invasion with the Patriarch still based in Constantinople. The newly formed Republic of Macedonia to Greece's north sees a mix of religions and its church a breakaway from the Serbian Orthodox church was created mid last century. The high Muslim population is a throw-back to the Ottoman period when life was an easier road if you apostatized to the Mohammedan faith. There were a great many Jews throughout Makedonia. They arrived in a safe-haven from the Spanish inquisitors. Their number was dramatically reduced at the hands of the Germans in WWII, see Klaus Waldheim.
