I have a Yorkie (Tater) who just turned 5 months old.  I noticed he was scratching a lot and had bumps and scabs on his head and neck. When I took him to the vet he told me that it was just him adapting to his environment and gave me some medicine and shampoo. It got better while he was on the medicine, but when he finished it, it got worse. It has now moved to his stomach and between his hind legs. The bumps start off red and turn into puss pockets. After that I assume they turn into scabs. My first thought is that he is allergic to fleas.  Any thoughts or comments?

abrown82,

It could be fleas although it could be a nutritional deficiency is contributing to his allergic reaction. What you are describing is not "hot spots" so we know that is is probably not from allergies to food, but if you are using certain cleaning chemicals in your home he may be suffering an allergic reaction to the chemicals.

I have a 7 month old yorkie and am having the same exact problem.  His poor little tummy is fire red and has little blisters all over it.  I am taking him to the vet this weekend, but I would greatly appreciate it if you could share any new information you have with me and I will do the same for you. My email address is debdcall@hotmail.com.  Thanks and good luck!

It's grass allergies.  My pitbull gets the same thing.  Nothing the vets gives him helps, but I learned that a small dosage of Benadryl really makes a difference when it is bad.  I use OTC hydrocortosone cream also to alleviate really itchy areas.  Once they get sores and they become puss filled the dog needs to go to the vet.  Otherwise, small sores have easily been treated with both the cream and Benadryl.  MUCH cheaper and easier to manage than going to the vet everytime.

My Yorkie (2 yr old) has this same type of allergy. We figured out that wood chips were causing the red spots on her belly, so we don't use wood chips in her run area.  However now she is itchy all over and the only thing that helps is Medrol which eliminated the scratching almost completely.
You are not supposed to use this long term.  I am trying a new medication called Atopica. It is not working after 4 days but it has eliminated her "doggy odor".  Let me know what you have tried.  marilyn.hu@yahoo.com

I have a 6 month old Yorkie and she is scratching often. I read in a book that you can give benadryl to a dog. She is 7.5 pounds now and I wonder how much I can give her. Please send me what you think I should do. Thanks

My dog has all the same symptoms as you all have talked about and he has Red Mange, which can be deadly. My doctor never saw it until I couldn't take the odor anymore. This doesn't mean your dogs have this but it's worth a try to have it checked out and have a skin test done before it gets to the point where I am at. The treatments are very expensive and there is no guarantee that my dog will make it..

I have a four year old Yorkie who has had this problem with small red bumps that turn to puss pockets then scabs for over a year now, I have turned to several different vets for an answer, with many different explanations and the only one that has remotely helped is the theory that LuLu is allergic to fleas and instead of giving her a dose of Advantage every four weeks the doctor has me religiously giving it to her every three weeks.  I am concerned about the Advantage being too toxic for her, so I switched one month to Frontline only to have the bumps return, so this month I am using Advantage and the bumps have once again subsided.  I don't know if this is the final answer to an awful problem for my baby but it is the only solution that has worked for a year and a half of searching.  One more theory that I was recently introduced to by another Yorkie owner is that she may have a yeast infection and it could be treated with birth control pill???  I will let you know if I try this and if it works.

My 2 year old Yorkie gets hot spots often, Her last bout was 2 and a half weeks ago and she was put on Prednisone 10 mg. with decreasing dose over a week or so. Also antibiotics and a salve. She gained alot of weight from her increased hunger due to the steroids. I would like an alternative to this! Anyone ever try "cool spot"?

My Yorkie 3 yrs. old is also scratching up a storm.
We have been going through this, this summer and last summer....NEVER in the winter.
UnLike the other Yorkies here he doesn't have any puss or sores.
It's just red little bumps, looks like hives.
He pulls out his hair around his chest area when he scratches.
I have him on childrens "chewable" benadryl and it seems to keep him comfortable for awhile, but once it wears off, he starts scratching again.
My groomer said he doesn't have any fleas so I have no idea why this happens every summer.
Maybe he's allergic to the grass in the park I take him to???
Help!!!
