Our puppy has a beard, is this normal?  We adopted her from a friend at 5 months old and don't have the papers, but were told that she's purebred.  Has anyone ever seen a Rottweiler with a beard?

She has hair from around her mouth kind of like a schnauzer.you know....a "beard". I know this sounds weird and maybe she has some schnauzer in her but we were told that she cost about a thousand dollars and she is supposed to be purebred ?  Just wondering if anyone knows about rottie beards or of anyone who has a rottie with a beard ???

Cindy, it is not common but anything is possible.  You could very well have a pure bred Rottweiler that has a recessive gene that causes the beard.  It would be considered a genetic defect and your girl should be spayed to not pass on the trait.

It is also possible that your girl DOES have some other dog in the bloodline and the previous owners are unaware of this.

It could be any number of things.  Do you know your girl's bloodline or do you have her parent's registration numbers, I could help you research this.  What breeder did she come from?

Thanks

My dog, who we were told was a pure breed rottweiler also has a beard. He is now 2 and has hair around his chin that is up to two inches long.
