Most labs live about 12 years. I had a wonderful Chocolate Labrador who lived to be 14 1/2 before she had to be put down to due severe crippling arthritis and other ailments.

Labs are wonderful dogs and great companions!

Black labs are the greatest dogs and companions ever. EVER. today i found out i may have to put my 9 year old male black lab down due to possible bone cancer. i feel like garbage, but i wouldn't have traded the time with him for anything.

I had a black lab who lived to be 13, he died because he got heartworm, but he was quite vibrant and energetic for his age, and just about the best watchdog ( although they are very nice dogs) you could ask for.

I just had a yellow lab that was the best dog I ever had.  Excellent with the children.  She did get cancer and we had to put here down 01-13-04.  She was 7.5 years.  I will definitely get another one and highly recommend for companionship for the kids.  Extremely loyal.  She was not a guard dog, but did watch everything all the time, especially the kids.  Lovable, and definitely needs to be part of the family.  My only regret is that I didn't excercise her more.  She had a weight problem for eating and lack of exercise.  This contributed to her hip problems.
She will always be my girl.
