I have a 1984 water-cooled VW Westfalia Camper van.  The engine and starter turn, but the engine won't start.  I checked the spark plugs.  It's getting spark.  Also, it's getting gas, in fact, the gas is coming out the exhaust pipes and muffler.

Any ideas as to the problem???

These engines have difficulty starting if left idle for some time as the gas leaks back from the carb and the pump won't trigger until it is running...soooo...take off the lid on the air filter and reach back into the intake and manually triggeer the plastic flap on the air intake to trigger the fuel pump to do its job...the engine should start....let it run a while...ps..its difficult to reach back to this flap but not impossible...the seepage of fuel is likely slow so consistent use after it starts should alleviate this problem until it is stored again for some time....have fun.,
