in the early 1900's immigration was a boring process in which people coming from other countries had to stop at Ellis Island in New York or Angel Island in California. If just the journey wasn't hard enough, could take anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months depending on weather, the test's for admittance were unforgiving.  The first thing the immigrants did was go to get their baggage if they had any, next they had to do the first part of their test without knowing it, the doctors would stand at the top of a very large set of stairs and watch for people who had trouble getting up them.  The second part was a physical exam where doctors made sure that you were able to do somekind of work.  The third part was literacy, the immigrants had to prove they were able to learn english.  After a literacy test, they had to pass customs which checked passports, visa's, and record's.  After all of these processes were done, they would eat and go to the ticket station.  At the station, they had to show at least 20$ to prove they could get their life started.  When they had got their tickets, they would go to the trains and look for any family that might have gotten lost.  If they were all there, they would go 2 miles away to New York City to start their new life.

Life as an Immigrant in the 1900's was Extremely harsh. If you really want to know a lot of what went on, read THE JUNGLE by Upton Sinclair. Basically, it was really disgusting about what went one. Good Luck!

Towards the end of the 19th Century a massive wave of immigrants came to Western Australia in search of gold. But by the beginning of the new century, most of the alluvial gold had been worked out, and the immigrants looked to agriculture to sustain them.
