Skin allergies are very common in Golden Retrievers and the offending
allergens are numerous - a flea bite, airborne pollen, dust, mold,
food. Symptoms can range from constant biting, licking and scratching
to constant, chronic ear infections. In many cases diet can play a
large role in the allergic dog. If you suspect you have an allergic
animal, consult with a canine allergist to determine the actual extent
   of the problem.

Allergies coupled with low thyroid levels are commonly seen and it is
often worth testing for the other if you see the one in your dog.

Hi Brian,

Both my goldens have allergies also.  We switched to a grain free food and it seems to help.  I feed them, Natural Balance Duck and Potato formula.  Try switching to a food that does not contain corn, wheat, rice, flour...etc.  Grains are a common allergen for goldens.  Just as mold and pollen are, as mentioned above.  It usually takes a few weeks before you notice a difference after switching foods.  Be sure to watch the ingredients in any treats you give also.  Good Luck, I know how frustrating it is.

hello, my golden also has bad allergies.  i thankfully have one of the best vets around.  here are a few of my vet's suggestions.  they worked on my chocolate & on my Golden.  1. try a oil bath.  by this i mean 1 cup olive oil to a gallon of water. pour & scrub into your dogs skin.  let set for at least 5 mins.  them use your allergy shampoo.  yes, it will eave coat a very little oily.  but it's so worth it.  it makes gracsee non itchy for 3 days!  2.also, i have cut out all processed dog food. it seems no matter what it makes her itch.  i used to make all of my choc'sfood from scratch.  there is a company called the honest kitchen ,contact them.  they are on the web. http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/index.htm they will ask how you hear about them.  just tell them HarlieO'sPet Supplies told you.  they have tons of helpful things.  also, make sure to add the fatty omaga pills to the diet.  this has really helped grace to not be so flaky.  4. this one is something i have not tried.  i have talked to several breeders that say they have been using the fatty hamburger.  RAW.  now i being a person who never eats hamberger........this is hard for me to do.  please let me know if you run onto anything that helps & how your dog is doing.  you can email me at harlieospetsupplies@comcast.net  hope i helped some.  sarah

My retriever had severe allergies. I fed him
a chicken/brown rice/mixed veggie diet and
gave him omega 3 oil and he had great skin
and coat for the reminder of his life.

We recently lost a 12 year old golden who had serious skin problems when she was younger.  At the time, our vet suggested we switch to California Natural pet food.  It worked wonders for Holly!  We didn't have problems with hot spots from that time on.  Good luck!

I have a golden retriever/German shep mixed that also have severe skin allergies.  solution (1) I keep him flees free with Frontline in the summer (2) changed his diet food that do not contain any and I mean any chicken product or by-product. His skin has been problem free for the past 14 months.

She is also on prescription diet, but is still itching, licking paws, yucky ears, loosing hair around her eyes. I am so frustrated and everything is getting so expensive. Any suggestions? Also any food ideas besides the prescription diets?

I have a 1 year old female golden who is constantly licking her paws and chewing on her inner legs.  I was wondering about getting her cortisone shots.  Does anyone know how often they need to take them and how much they cost?  She has been to the vet several times for this and all they tell me is to use cortisone over the counter spray which she licks off or get her an allergy test which is $500.00  If anyone can help me with how much the pricing on the shot is that would be wonderful.  Thanks!
