Telecommunications would encompass at least most aspects of getting information from one place to another, without the person sending info actually physically being at the destination.

The engineer gets to set those systems up, or perhaps develop new systems, or find new ways of using existing systems.  There are physical systems - fiber optic lines in the ground, satellites, cell towers, phones - as well as virtual systems, standardizing HOW information is transmitted and received (like HTTP, or POP3 e-mail protocols).

Good engineers have to be attentive to detail and have mathematically-adept minds, but the value of good communication skills cannot be shortchanged!  Chances are, the engineer will have to explain technical concepts to people that are completely unfamiliar with them, and need to endure at least 4 years of university classwork involving at least one hard science.

The big fear I would forsee for an engineer is not being able to find work that's up to par with his/her education and experience, and winding up working as a technician - this is nothing shameful, but gaining a huge amount of education in any field and then working at a lower level within that field can be a great source of unhappiness and give a sense on unfullfillment, unfairness, etc.
