My 4 year old black cat Jim has been diagnosed with FUTD (Feline Urinary Tract Disease).  He is now hospitalized for the 2nd time in 2wks and he had to be catheterized both times. The Vet said if he has to come back for a 3rd time, we should consider the Surgery (Perineal Urethrostomy).  I want to know what his quality of life would be after such a procedure.  Does he have a chance to stay happy, affectionate and loving, or will he be in pain, miserable and mean? If anyone has a cat that has gone through this, please let me know how your cat is.  Thanks for your insight.

Our black cat, BJ, also was treated and hospitalized with a catheter twice for FUTD.  It was quite traumatic for all of us, especially our poor baby.  We are happy to say that we have had no problems since his second occurence (knock on wood!)  We feel him Science diet CD with just a few treats here and there.  We also bought a drinking fountain that constantly circulates fresh water.  Between that and sitting in the bathroom on the counter to "catch" the drips, he gets plenty to drink.   Hang in there!

Hi Angie:
My black cat, Smokey, had the surgery when he was about a year old.  He lived to be almost 17 so go for the surgery and put an end to your cat's problem.  Also, don't feed him anything with fish in it, it contains too much ash which promotes urinary problems. Hope your baby does well.

Hi my black cat Taz has the same problem and they may be performing the surgery in the next day or so. I am worried sick if i am doing the right thing?
Is it just me or do you think it is strange that all our cats are black?

My 4 year old tabby, Ian is going in for a PU tomorrow morning...he's had 3 catheters since Friday morning and can't seem to unblock...seems like I've been hearing all good stuff about this surgery - cross your fingers for him.

the p.u. is an easily recoverable operation.  my boy never noticed anything different, except that he feels much better because he can pee!  i feed him the Hills CD diet very strictly...only a little treat once a week, and NO FISH.  have the surgery.
good luck.

My cat has been at the vets since sunday morning. they said he wasnt fully emptying his bladder and he hasnt been getting better. I am fighting really hard to get the PU surgery for him, but my mom thinks its mean to do that to him. If anyone who has gotten this done for their cat could email me, i would really appreciate it. jkramer69@hotmail.com

thanks.
