Please Help!!!

My dog has tetanus.  He is on Penicillin and amoxicillin.  I am wondering if anyone knows about antitoxins and the result.  Also any info would be appreciated regarding treatment and outcomes.  I believe he is in the beginning stages.
He is about 4 years old and is a German Shorthair Pointer.
Thank you!!

Our Dog is just recovering from Tetanus.
At the outset she had seizures and muscle contractions
we rushed to the vets where she was kept for 2 week on antibiotics and sedatives
she was also cooled down to keep her body temperature right
When she came home we had to keep her quiet
she could not walk and had to help to poo and pee
She is making a very slow recovery
She can walk again but not run
and indoors she seems to have no balance
The vets cannot say if she will make a full recovery
I wish you well with your dog
Quiet , love and affection after the anti biotics seems to be the only treatment

Hi Heidi,
I don't have an answer.  Our dog, Sara, was just diagnosed with tetanus, also. She is on an IV and cannot eat or drink.  If you have any contacts that may be able to help, or if anyone reading this would like to, feel free to contact me at AnnMcAvoyC21@aol.com
She got it after being spayed,we saw 3 vets before she was diagnosed.
Thanks,  Ann

My two year old Lab/Chow mix is suffering from tetanus right now! He was diagnosed after I took him to the er vet on Thanksgiving day.....I am on day six and it's horrible.  He was put in the intensive care at my vet the day after thanksgiving, he seemed to make some improvement and sent me home with him on Saturday, he quickly went down hill again!  I took him back first thing Monday morning and tomorrow will be his third day.  He's starting to have muscle spasms so they have him on valium which makes him look and act like a rag doll.  He did open his eyes today and acknowledged my presence with a deep sigh.  Tomorrow if he is unable to swallow they will put in a feeding tube.  Some dogs I have read about had to be put on respirators which my vet is not able to do.  I feel like they are not fighting for Cosmo the way I am.  The recovery can take weeks and even months for a full recovery, but he's just a baby and deserves a chance.  I'm thinking of calling UCF (local college) to see if they will be willing to take him on as a test case since this is a rare disease.  I just need to feel PASSION in the recovery of my dog.  Please keep us posted on you dog and I will do the same on mine!

My one year old Moab was just diagnosted in the Dominican Rep with tetanus...it was two weeks before they could figure it out...and now he is really sick...It started out that his ears raised up (which for a lab is unusual), then the whites of his eyes stood out, and he got stiff around his hind legs and quarters, and soon he was walking like a robot.  He didn't cry but he didn't like me touching his face, and he became sensitive to light and sounds.  And he began drinking a ton of water and eating less, and slept more.  He seemed in pain, but I didn't know what it was.  We brought him to a better vet who treated him right away, and probably saved his life!  I did a ton of research online though, and found out that dogs with tetanus need to be brought into clinics for a good week or so, because they need a lot of care (antibotics, anti-tentanus shots, tranquilizors to prevent seizures, heart meds if necessary, and ivs)...if they can't eat or drink anymore and their temperature gets too high, ususally they have to be put down.  Dogs can make a great come back but suddenly have a relaps, so keep your dog under vet care for a good few days after they get better, to be sure.  Recovery at home can take up to a month or more, and sometimes dogs never fully regain muscle control that was lost in advanced cases.  But most of the time, they do!  Put the dog in a dark space, no noise or bright light, and they may have problems going the bathroom for a while, and need constant help, and they sleep heavily.  Good luck...

Hi, my dog is suffering from tetanus right now and I cant afford to keep her in the hospital and things like that.  I bought the antitoxin at a local feed store and administered it myself.  I have been reading to keep her in a dark quiet place and hopefully she will be OK from me doctoring her.  Best wishes!!!

My dog just died from presumed tetanus. We brought her to the vet on Friday night because she was having vomiting and episodes of shaking. By Sunday morning she had developed the locked jaw, pinned back ears, and wrinkled forehead; and could not walk very well. By Sunday afternoon she was unable to move and was sensitive to light/sound and having muscle contractions. She stopped breathing early Monday morning and her heart stopped, they could not get her back with life support. She did not get the anti-toxin, the neurologist our vet talked to said it could cause more harm than good if she had a reaction to it. Sorry to have such sad news to anyone who's dog has been diagnosed, but all the information we had found were stories of dogs who had made it through, unfortunately that was not the case for us

I just got my dog, Biscuit, spayed last week.  She was having some weird symptoms, like her eyes were drooping and then rolling back in her head, a few days after I got her home, but I thought it was just from the anesthesia.  This morning, she couldn't open her mouth or walk, so I rushed her in.  The vet says it is tetanus.  He is treating her with Pennicillin and Batril and sedating her with barbituates.  She is on an IV to keep her from organs from shutting down while the antibiotics work.  He did NOT give her an anti-toxin, which worries me after reading up on tetanus in dogs, and I have no way to reach him over the weekend (today is Saturday).  I read that the anti-toxins are important to bind the toxins that are already in her system, but that a lot of vets don't give them because of the risk of an allergic reaction.  I am so worried about her - the vet hospitals have lots of barking dogs, and she is so afraid when she is not at home.  I feel very helpless, and stupid that I did not recognize the symptoms sooner.
