What does the Fnumber mean on a lense. I have a Nikkor 28-105 f/3.5-4.5D.  What does the f4.5-5.5 mean in this instance.

Thanks

f means the 'f-stop' or the focal length of the camera lens the numbers denote the range of focus from the subject you are photographing... the larger the number the more in focus the objects in the foreground and the background will be... for example the number 16 will mean that the objects in the far background will be in focus... conversely, a number two will mean the background will be blurry (while your subject will be in focus)... hopefully that will help.

I think that this means that the focal length ranges from 28mm to 105mm and the maximum aperture is f/3.5 to f/4.5 and that it is a D-type lens.

To find out more about focal length, f-number, aperture diameter, etc. there are some good resources on the web such as
http://tangentsoft.net/fcalc/help/FNumber.htm
and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-number

The D-type lens is briefly described in
http://www.nikon.co.jp/main/eng/news/1997/aug27e_97.htm

"The D in D-type lens stands for Distance. The lens has an encoder linked to the lens distance ring, and when the ring is rotated the distance is automatically transmitted to the camera body."

Hope this helps.

Aperture's opening. We can get f number by dividing lens's focal length by aperture's opening diametre.
Example: Lense's Focal length is 50 mm
Aperture's opening is 35.7 mm (Approx.)
50/35.7 =1.4 (Approx.)
This is f/1.4

Your Nikkor 28-105 lense has veriable focal length. So, the f number also veries with corresponding focal length 3.5 - 4.5.
