The "kastra" were built to protect the Greek Makethonai Byzantine inheritors of the Eastern Roman Empire which had meshed with the Hellenic Empire created by Alexander. These Kastra were built to defend the enlightened populace from the invading Barbarians. The interesting feature of these castle walls is the use of Ancient Marble Columns (Probably from Pella)as the base foundations. There's also a sizable Castle built by conquering Serb king which falls in the Thessaly region, south of Makethonia.
