most steering columns have a joint of sorts in them. That may be damaged and binding up as you turn the wheel. You can usually see such a joint under the hood. If your steering wheel is equipped with "The Club", take it off before driving (ha-ha).

Believe it or not, look for the simplest thing.  Lack of clearance where the base of the wheel enters the top of the column, housing the shaft.  Worse in the heat.  Alleviated by using a little Vaseline or lithium grease.

I have a 2000 ford Taurus and when I turn the steering wheel I hear a dry tight friction noise
