I HAVE WASTED ONE HOUR OF MY TIME GOING THROUGH YOUR Q & As TO FIND OUT HOW I OPEN A MIME FILE SENT TO ME BY A STUDENT.  THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I WILL ASK THE SAME QUESTION. HOW DO I OPEN THE FILE?

Thank you for blaming the general public for wasting your time. End of sarcasm. Maybe if you 'waste' your time on this URL:
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
you might get a answer faster next time.

However, I'd still like to offer you some suggestions on you specific problem: How to open a 'mime-file'. I'd could give you a tour about the technicalities, but I won't. Your best solution would be:

- Determine what OS you are using. (Windows?/Linux?/Unix?/Dos?/Home-grown?)
- If you have a email program, what is the name of it?

Then, use your internet-browser to a search engine, such as http://www.google.com/ and search for "<email program> with MIME-support for <your OS name>"

Hopefully, you are able to determine whether you need to install a new email program, or if your existing program already has mime support.

Then, when you have been able to compose a sensible question, ask it to someone you know. Good options are:

"How do I save attachments as with email program X under operating system Y"
"How do I determine the file-type of file W under operating system Y"
"How do I determine files of the type U under operation system Y"

If you are wondering which person to ask: Start with the help-desk! Or the student who sent you the email in the first place.

And remember: Ignorance isn't an excuse, just plainly (somewhat reluctantly) confess you are ignorant. And hopefully willing to learn

I like you could have done without the sarcasm, but I will have to say after looking for almost 6 months on how to open one of these damn files, your explanation is the best I've come across.  I'll try this and let you know how it worked.
