I too would like to know how to use .exe files with Linux. I have recently changed from windows OS having a totally Linux system, I was getting tired of the windows moronic programmers never getting their OS right. I have a ton of games and apps I'd like to use but don't know how. If you find out let me know.;)

you cannot run .exe files under linux. however, you can download WINE (winhq.org) and run windows applications under that; be warned, though, that WINE is not that great.

You can also use an emulator on top of Linux such as VMWare and install windows inside it. It allows you to run windows applications... comes with a price though. Also check Plex86 (ex-FreeMWare). You'll need windows software and a Windows license for it.

I heard theres a way to hack the kernel to run .exe's but I dont think its possible. Wine probably couldn't be used to run games but there are lots of excellent linux games like Unreal Tornument 2004 , Medal of Honur , Doom 3 etc. Check www.linuxgames.com (I think thats the url!)

I have tried to run an .exe file (Gamespy Install) under Red Hat Linux 8.0 using wine. It executes fine, but the images for the buttons don't work and sometimes the buttons didn't work at all. However, I couldn't change the install location which defaulted to C:/Program Files/etc so I gave up. But, it will open the file. Unsure how much it can do...

Linux doesn't support execution of .exe file.
Still there's an alternative, we can run it through "wine" application. Download it's rpm from
www.winehq.com and proceed.

ok... thanks for that guys because my windows won't boot anymore even when full format and unpartition so I'm running Ubuntu on my laptop.
If anyone knows a program that can play .mp3 files on Ubuntu Linux, help would be dearly appreciated.
Also... Who knows how to install normal games (that run on windows) on Ubuntu Linux, like starcraft, counterstrike or Soldat?

Thankyou very much for the help

OK,

Operating systems use different methods to run programs. The windows system uses WIN32. Different procedure calls are built into OS's and programs use these standard calls to do things. Windows XP for instance uses one set of procedure calls and the linux kernal uses another set. Programs such as WINE and other OS emmulators essential take the 'core' components and make them available. It honestly is not 'difficult' to do this, but there may be copyright on some processes (which is stupid but I geuss people kill to be able to use things like words in a certain order..) If you learn programming what you need to do is reverse engineer windows or write your own 'emulator'. We will progress towards a united system, windows itself doesn't own the .EXE format much like they don't own the .COM format or the .BAT format (as far as I know...) So all you need to do is write say in C or ASM all the processes. The easy part of this is that a good programming suit should have all this information. So eseentially you can kill two birds with one stone. 1. you can run every application. 2. you can program with every default code process.  I found VMware for windows to be fairly simple to use. I am now going to see about plex for linux.

don't try to hack the kernel unless your a highly advanced linux user, you can screw your computer forever if you hit the wrong button. I'm not saying "don't" just make sure you know what's going on first.
