OK i get it, you all don't know your history to much do you? Do any of you know what a rude boy was in the first place? i don't think so. Let me refresh your memory.During the 1960's the ghettos of Jamaica were filling up with kid looking for jobs that did not exist. These kids felt excluded and did not share the cheerfulness of early Ska roots. These kids drew group identity as "Rude Boys". Being a “Rude Boy” was a being somebody when everyone was telling you were nobody. That i my definition. now most of the people into ska that i have met are nice people. not "rude boys" or girls whatever you wast to call it. do me a favor and read up on stuff before you claim you are something you are not. there are no rude girls and boys anymore, just really mixed up kids. i bet you don't even know what dance hall crashers are (and i am not talking about the band children) if anyone is smart enough to know that then we can get a real Q&A going.

(Started learning yesterdae) I've juz begun to learn how to be a rude girl. In fact I've chosen it coz I find it interesting. Frm my process of being a rude girl is rather difficult. The main thing is tt u gotta knoe wads the culture bout. The tradition n the history. E.g:wad does 'rude' mean exactly? It means being somebody when the sociaty says ur nobody. Rude boy has all start ages ago. As you may think that ruddies n ska r the same.. Wrong! Ruddies dance slower and hve a manacing posture than ska. Back then, Ruddies had no luck on finding jobs, money and they found themselves existing in the ghettos. They start to mix wit the underworld n started forming gangs. Therefore this a brief of Ruddies, more on, u have to find out urself.

its easy... if you love the music, the culture and your roots... you're it... you don't have to be ska'dby people to say you are a rude.... being rude is listening to no one but yourself.... if you like getting all dressed up and go to the local scenes at gigs and stuff, you get to meet other people in the same interests as you... you could talk about the music and the culture all day long with him/her... well, believing in unity is all about 2tone... as for traditional ska, its more of violence... but 2tone music beats 2o times faster than traditional music as said.... the first rude girls were actually the girlfriends of the gun-tottin' rude bois.... but Today, one can no longer regard themselves as a rude girl when they are the girlfriends of rude bois... one must have the attitude and the love for the music... The bodysnatchers were like one of the first rude girl band... and many famous rude girls like mille small, marcia griffiths were the first rude girls.... as for rude boys, they were a product of mean streets of shanty town as said by Desmond Dekker... the ramshackle dwellings and stuff... ska is actually very interesting... HAhahhaHAh i'mska'dfor life... and i'mdefinetely ruder than any of you!!!!!!!!!

I hate that everyone is still labling themselves. Whether you say your a rudie or a skin or a mod or indie or whatever, it just sounds stupid. Who cares listen to whatever you want. Our generation has no lables we are all a copy of our parents generation and before. Yes I LOVE ska, like Phillis Dillion, Trojans, Ken Booth, Ethiopians, Melodians, Alton Ellis, Skatalites, Laurel A., Jumpstarts ect, ect, ect and when I was in school I used to always go to the shows and danced my ass off, but I hated it when people would ask me " Are you a Rude girl or a Bird?" I think it's so stupid! So what im trying to say enjoy the music dont be so obssesed over how you look or what you are to fit in a scene. Also like everyone said also do the research. Much Love

why doesn't anyone know how to spell anymore? anyway. ska isn't about the beer, it isn't about the clothes. know the history, but it isn't a social studies lesson, listen to the music! dress how you feel. always do that. rude boys were those who couldn't get jobs in jamacia as mentioned, and so they began to wear suits to mock those who had jobs and wouldn't let them have jobs as well. rude girls were originally just the girlfriends of rude boys. nowadays, the third wave rudies are totally different. there aren't any "real" rudies, but the ones of nowadays just go to shows and have a good time. do what you want, enjoy the music. it's not hard! feel it. and skank it up baby! know your local ska bands, support them. know the legendary bands and love them. know what you like, and stick with it! if you really have questions, or just want to talk to me for whatever reason, i/m me. vampska3. and my livejournal name ((yes i'm sorry, i have one -embarrassed look-)) is the name i have supplied above... ^^ enjoy, and happy skanking!! :x:Jackie:x:

Redness and the original rude boys had absolutely nothing to do with ska. The rude boy came AFTER ska music, during the time of rock steady. It was the the name given to a subculture of young street corner hoodlums, gangsters and other unemployables. from emigrating to England, the rude boys helped spread Jamaican music to the working-class skinheads, another youth subculture. When the 2Tone sound of ska (the second wave of ska in the late Seventies) made it into the popular media, youth subculture changed with it. The rude boy was not the first subculture of Jamaica, but it was the first youth subculture. After independence in the early Sixties (which gave birth to the nationalist 'ska' music), over-population was putting extreme demands on the basics of life---housing, work and food. The response to these conditions was the start of a creation of a new subculture, unofficially called scufflers. Scuffling was just scrounging to get by. with in that decade the scuffles became know as the rude boys. They had there own style and were between the ages fourteen to twentiefive. Most of them carried guns , ratchets and knives. they came from all over west kingston. Most of them wore pork pie hats and 3-button tonic suits. It was the ganster look , and gave people the impression of uper class. they became know for smashing bottles for no reason and they would b the ones to pull out a knife or gun first. Thats what started the hole sub genre. the 2 tone movie ment was in the 7o's. Both balck and white kids were dressing nice and calling them selves rudeboys, it was the way of showing the roots of Jamaican music. :-)

Being a rude boy (or girl, if that's what the female equivelent want to call themselves)is not knowing history. I know a lot of history on the Isrealites, but that doesn't make me a jew. It's not just listening to ska music, or listening to only ska music. It's not being unemployed, or downtrodden. There is no specific criteria. You just know it when you are. Do you love upstrokes and brass together? Do you skank when others mosh? Do you find yourself searching for two tone clothing? Do you love the sun? (and don't any of you try to separate the sun from ska. Ska, in its modern sense, cannot be without the cali sun feeling at somepoint) You're probably a rude boy. It's not something that happens all of a sudden, but you know it when you get there. It's a state of mind, not a style. Ska has evolved some over time. It's not the 50's ska anymore. It's been through about 3 or 4 generation waves, the last of which was that of the late nineties. We're still riding that wave, and that type of ska is what ska is now. Punks love punk, rudeboys love ska. that's the way it is.

You people are ridiculous. "Rude girls" (or whatever you think youre calling yourselves)... hahaha. Rude'nReady I seriously hope you dont think you have the right to "Dress up like a skingirl", because any self-respecting skinhead girl would beat the everloving CRAP out of you. You people are not "rude" anything. Youre a bunch of little kids who are into crappy third wave and two-tone ska, and know nothing about the history of what youre claiming to be. Youre so rude, huh? Ok, so you guys are all from Jamaica, youre all selling junk off pushcarts and dealing dope, and each one of you has stabbed someone at least once... is that what youre telling me? Do you even know what a ratchet knife is? Go back to high school. Jamaica doesnt want you and the ska scene has enough of you.

Rude boy, rudie, rudi or rudy is a subculture that developed in the early 1960s in Jamaica and has close ties to skinhead culture. The term rude boy is thought to originate from an extremely potent rum-based drink called "Rude to your parents", which was served at sound system parties. The rude boy culture originated in the ghettos of Kingston, where disaffected, unemployed youth started wearing sharp suits and pork-pie hats in an imitation of the upper class. Most rude boys were armed and organised in gangs, and violence was an integral part of rude boy lifestyle. With growing emigration in the late 1960s, the rude boy culture and its music, ska/rocksteady, spread to England and from there to most other western countries. It has had considerable influence on early skinhead culture. The name Rudy often appears in ska/rocksteady and punk lyrics as an allusion to the rude boy subculture. Much of Desmond Dekker's most popular songs were about Rude boys; 007 (Shanty Town), Rude Boy Train, Warlock, and others all revolved around this subculture. Other famous Rude boy-related songs were "Rudie Can't Fail" by The Clash and "A Message To You Rudy" by The Specials (originally by Dandy Livingstone). In some parts of the United Kingdom the phrase rude boy is used to describe Chavs.

Come on guys, it's about feeling it . .all of it . . it doesn't matter how you dress, how you act if you love the music . .you don't care what "name" someone gives you . .if you live the life then you're not looking to be labeled. You don't just wake up and decide to be a 'rude girl' and you can't call yourself rude . .if you feel it . .if you live it . .then everyone else will recognize you as it. I've been listening to punk/ska for a while now . . and I love it . .and sure I dress it . .sure I live it . .but I'm not going to call myself a rudie or i'm not going to call myself punk . . . It's all about feeling it. Music is an extension of ourselves, it can make us happy, sad, angry . .whatever . . but it's all about feeling . .it's sad that it can't just be music anymore and that it can't be enjoyed .. that people have to associate all these other things with it . .music is living . . .just because you don't 'live' the way other people who listen to the same music do . .doesn't not make you not a part of the scene . . just because you don't follow the 'lifestyle' or know everything there is to know about it . .isn't a bad thing . .if you love it enough and you're interested, you'll learn . .but on your own time and because you want to . .not because people tell you to. If you live for music. . do it because you want to . . if you want to follow the 'lifestyle' don't do it because you want to be recognized as a 'punk' or a 'rudie' . .do it because you love it. If you are serious into getting into ska go back to the 1960s and read up a little bit on the culture. Listen to some Judge Dread, Skatalites. Then some Two Tone like the Specials and the Madness. It's really about being it in your heart. The actuality that in America one is really a Rude Boy or Rudie at all is very slim as the conditions are not the same. Those who are dressing up are doing it for the scene. Read up a little, go to shows, feel the music and be happy. I know this post is old but just in case people keep visiting it. Rude boys and Rude Girls have changed. There is no more violence at ska scenes. "Rudies" are just people who are really into that 2tone beat and listen to all the ska. Mostly the second wave is the best. 3rd wave is too punky for me but dont get me wrong i still love it. Another thing with "rudies" is they all share unity and dont judge EACHOTHER. They are all friendly and excepting. You got to know the Unity before you call yourself a Rudie. And no Rudie is better or worse. You got to learn how to skank too. you dont need to be good at skanking but good enough to join the pits. If your not in the Skank Pit then your not a "rudie".

Don't just listen to ska, feel it. It's more than just a genre of music to a lot of people. Know it's history and traditions to some extent. That is SO important.

i don't have much to say about this, but i have got to say that just listening to ska and "feeling" it isn't gonna make you a rude girl, or rude boy for that matter. i have to agree with the last ska junkie on this one...if you want to be a rude girl or rude boy, learn about the history, the whole reason we are around. don't just listen to the music and go whoring around our scene!!! the history is the whole reason rude girls and boys are here...and if you don't like it, you aren't worthy for the scene!!! peace....

Study the history and lifesyle of Rudys, and know ska at th tip of your fingertips eg King of Ska, Godfather of Ska etc. Reading up the Skinhead Bible helps to let you see what the whole scene is about. If you are ready get yourself a pair of Mary Jane Shoes. Rude Girl have the liberty of dressing up like skingals or modettes.

It's not that hard. You dress sharp, you drink the beer, you dance, you listen to the ska...but while you're doing that read up about the culture and history and take it in as your own. The Ska sub-culture is a very unique one. I'm proud of it...we're so classy.

First of all i am answering in the term of a rude boy,and i think that the roots, the music, and the culture is how it all starts. I understand that rude boy/girl is a term from rough street kids back in a poor society but it doesn't hurt to claim your one now if you don't live that harsh life style. As long as ska is where you come from and its true to you as a fan, than your becoming only ruder and ruder.

In Response To: "Last Ska Junkie" Stop trying to look superior by quoting facts and such and putting people down. That doesn't make you more "rude" than anyone else. Ska is all about unity, acceptance, and having fun. I thought an "expert" on ska such as yourself would at least know that.

Rude girls today are like a couple people said, bratty ghetto youth with a lot of lip, causing trouble and living in a rough environment, that's the Jamaican sense of the term 'rude' continuing, not really that much to do with ska anymore which is more middle class kids playing dress-up. Not that there's anything wrong with that necessarily...

For me being a rude girl first is to learn the knowledge, history and many things about ska. Not just that, I also learn about the people such as Laurel Aitken and so on. You also have to dress like one too. I guess that's all I have too say.Peace!

while traditionally rude fellows were the people of the ghetto looking for jobs that didn't exhist, today they are the what people commonly call the listeners of ska. Listen to ska, like ska, and dress to your enjoyment.
