The First World War is also called the Great War because of the extensive damage and impact it left on the world after its cessation. Amongst all the wars which have occured since the 19th century, only the WW1 has been as far-reaching in damage, not only physically but mentally to citizens of countries involved in the war. In comparison to WW2, where only the Jews have been singled out in most reviews of the war, the WW1 affected nearly everybody.

It was not called WW I until nearly the end of WW II when it was obvious that the 1940's war was also a world war like the Great War. There are a several written materials also calling the Great War the World War - but the I became obvious by WWII.

It was called the great war because it was the first war to have all the continents involved(except antarctica). It had the most casualties of any war and it was called "The Great War" because they were gonna try to stop another one from happening.

Well it is still called the Great War in the UK, but the American "World War 1" was fought from 1917 - 1918. They joined the Great War in 1917 and gave it their own name. The Great War is called so because it was thought that no war in the future would be as horrific as that one.

because there was fighting in several areas, many countries and people were at war.on one side or the other, the conflict lasted a long time, fighting spread to war at sea and in the air,the war affected millions of households by creating shortages and altering patter works, for the first time ever people at home,as well as soldiers.faced death or injury from air attacks, the weapons used caused a huge casualty rate (5,509 deaths per day on average, fighting n land was based on  heavily defended positions ( both sides dug trenches to create fronts, the degree of fighting in a small area, caused mass casualties (over 2,800,000 deaths alone on the main front). most battle tactics led to heavy casualties (both sides mounted offensives;many of these failed with heavy loss of life)and finally, most families and communities were permanently changed by the effects of the conflict(the annual poppy day appeal and war memorials are visible signs that people in Britain still remember the war.

World war one was originally called The great war because it was so big the biggest in fact anyone had ever seen. It then later got the name World war 1 because of the second world war we had. Of corse if people had called 'the great war' world war one back then it suggests they know there will be another war in the later years.

The first world war was called the Great War because the effects of it were experienced globally, which was new to the people involved in it.

The term "World War" was coined in the early 20th century, some years before the First World War broke out. It was recognised that the complex system of opposing alliances—Germany-Austria-Italy vs France-Russia-Britain-Serbia—was likely to lead to a global conflict in the event of war breaking out. The fact that the powers involved had large overseas empires virtually guaranteed that a conflict would be global, as the colonies' resources would be a crucial strategic factor. The same strategic considerations also ensured that the combatants would strike at each others' colonies, thus spreading the fighting far more widely than in the pre-colonial era.

While the First World War came to be described as a "world war" within days of its outbreak, it does not appear to have been called the First World War until the start of the 1920s. It was more commonly known as the Great War until the outbreak of the far greater Second World War made the distinction necessary.

The term "Second World War" was also coined in the 1920s. In 1928, US Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg advocated his treaty "for the renunciation of war" (known as the Kellogg-Briand Pact) as being a "practical guarantee against a second world war". The term came into widespread use as soon as the war began in 1939.

Other languages have also adopted the "World War" terminology; for instance, in French, the two World Wars are the Guerres Mondiales; in German, the erste und zweite Weltkrieg; in Russian the ìèðîâûå âîéíû; and so on.

we call it the Great War because of all the damage and the amount of death that followed. No war that has followed has caused as much damage, which is why it is called the Great War. Also the fact that most of the counties in the world were affected accounts for it
