Don't get a Doberman or Rottwieler or an APBT. They have a tendency to be, as their owners say "a dog that wouldn't hurt a fly" then at any unexpected moment they snap for no reason and hurt someone. This doesn't always happen with them and they may seem sweet but their instinct is to kill so don't take the risk. Also, all pups will play bite out of fun but this habit needs to be broken immediately before it is established. Good luck! Tanisha

Any dog will bite!! I have a rotti and I can trust her with my life. If you don't give a dog the time they need, any dog will turn if they need to! Ok, so you hear that Goldens are great...they are, but they can still bit. Dobermans are very sweet and some pitbulls can be too. Training is all it takes! I would stay away from Chows though!!

people need to understand that ANY dog will bite. if you look at the number of bite's caused by rotti's, pit's, and akita's, compared to a cocker spaniel you will change your mind. the owner is what makes or breaks a dog.

any dog will bite. but the top 10 most likely dogs to bite in order as of 2001 would be:

   -german shepard
   -chow chow
   -akita
   -rotwiler
   -dobermand pinscher
   -pit bull terrier
   -mixed breeds
   -alaskan malamute
   -st. bernard
   -grate dane

any of these dogs could be wonderful pets if you are a responsible pet owner that is willing to take the time to properly train your dog. i myself have had 3 dogs on this list. the doberman, the shepard, and the Chow Chow. they made wonderful companions and could do the same for you if you are up to the task of training your dog. if not than i would suggest you to look elsewhere for your dog. maybe from the non sporting group. or the hound group.

the APBT is not the most likely to bite you is a poodle or any number of the small breed dogs .ive owned many dogs in my time . my APBT never bit anyone but me and it was accidently and never broke the skin never really put pressure on me just bit down realized had me and let go .. my worst one was a poodle.  its the OWNER not the dog that makes the conditions for a bite possible .

that was 4 months ago, he would be 9 months old on november 4th. i had to put him to sleep 4 days ago because of his aggressive behavior. i never hit him, i spoiled him and gave him as much time as i could, i socialized him and everything. i agree with nate. its the owner who makes or breaks the dog. and in the case it was the man who had him as a pup before me. my point is that they aren't born ready to kill       someone. Someone makes them that way.

I have a pit bull terrier/lab mix and she is the best dog I have ever had. And actually COCKER SPANIELS are the dog most likely to bite you. i would trust a pit over a cocker any day!! But it is true that ANY dog has the potential to bite...if you raise them right and socialize them with all kinds of kids, people and other animals from an early age they should be fine. Only dogs with a screw or two loose is going to turn on you, but a dog of sound mind, given the right upbringing, is going to be great ...and no matter what type of dog it is or how sweet it is..never leave a child unattended with a dog. Because even your faithful golden could take a chunk out of junior!!

Every dog has teeth. Hence, every dog bites. It's what the media and people who don't understand the psycosis of a dog want you to believe. I would much rather be bitten by a Chihuahua that a pit bull. On the other hand, I would much rather be bitten by a pit bull than 10 chihuahuas.

Any dog can be a vicious one, but I've heard that dalmatians are more likely to bite due to their need to have a dominant owner. I had a dalmatian and she was a great dog, so it does depend on how much time you spend on training a dog. Some are harder to train, so unexperienced dog owners need to keep that in mind when going out and getting a dog

It is true that any dog will bite.  Even Cocker Spaniels and chihuahuas are in the top ten mostly likely to bite.  The truth is, there are good and bad dogs in every breed and there are good and bad owners for every breed. Any dog, no matter how well trained or friendly, could bite at any time if it is put in a situation where it feels uncomfortable.   Growing up with pit bulls, I can honestly say that I have never had a bad encounter with one.  The one I own and the ones I have met have always been extremely friendly, and mine has yet to even try to bite anyone.  They are a very affectionate breed. However, anyone considering one as a pet needs to be aware that they were originally bred as a fighting dog and that they are potentially very dangerous animals, due to their breeding and extremely powerful jaws.  Pits should be taken very seriously and socialized from the start, like any dog. Also, like any dog, they should be monitored around children and strangers. Remember, it is in their nature to want to dominate other dogs, but also to serve their masters. Therefore, they are  more likely to attack other dogs and animals than they are people, and that means that they especially need to be watched around strange animals. Owning any animal with teeth or claws requires you to be a caring and responsible owner, otherwise there is always potential for danger.  Before owning any breed, you should always do your research and make sure that you understand your breed and have the time and energy to train and socialize it.

Listen it is a proven fact that any dog can bite!! statistically labradors yes people i said labs and cocker spaniels were ranked number one!! pitbull came in fourth FROM THE BOTTOM. I work at a doggie day care also and out of 45 dogs a day pitbulls, akitas, chows, labs, goldens, labradooles, boston terriers you name it we have it out of all those dogs our worst fighters and instegators are the labs and golden retrievers. What people need to do is there homework, if you want a particular breed look it up learn about it you might find that the breed is not for you. Then when you do find the breed of choice make sure you have the time to commit to the animal, dogs of any kind shouldnt be left alone for long periods of time with no socialism (THIS IS WHAT WILL CREATE A BITER OR OTHER BAD HABITS !!!!} Socialism is very important if you do not have the time for this, then i suggest you get a cat they like to be loners!!

Educate yourself with the statistics before jumping to make statements about breeds. While Pit Bulls are usually the so-called bad breed you hear about in the papers and news they do not fill a spot at the top of the "dogs most likely to bite" list. I'm not here to give any breed a bad name, but I would like to offer some knowledge.   You will find that Pits are likely to cause damage if they bite (this could be the reasoning for all the PB News Coverage).  Anyways here are the facts:  All dogs have the potential to bite. Biting is not a breed specification.  Dogs need love.  They need responsible, caring, educated owners.  They must be socialized.  Puppies should be exposed to a large range of people and other animals (this includes cats). They need to be leashed on walks etc.  They need to be contained inside a fence while outdoors.             Pets should be allowed indoors and not chained up to a dog house.  The need proper medical care.  In the long run negligence generally attributes to dogs that bite.  So in essence we're the ones to blame.  BLAME the DEED not the BREED!  From a loving mother of a Pit Bull

First of all I totally disagree with Tanisha's answer!!! I have raised APBT for 4 years and my older sister has Rotti's I do know that they both have a bad reputation but that isn't there fault. It is the people that have owned them that gave them this reputation. BLAME THE DEED,NOT THE BREED. Any dog will bite it doesn't matter if they weigh 150lbs. or 5lbs. My younger sisters jack russel is worse than my 2 pitbulls put together!!! It all depends on how the are raised!!

ANY dog can bite, dogs classified as pitbull breeds are less likely to bite then a chow or a dalmation.  Pomeranians have killed babies.  TANISHA you are absolutly wrong by saying that people should stay away from pits or dobies or rots, there has never been an unprovocked bite from a pit in canada, the owner makes the dog, there is no way to classify a breed besides looks, just like human races, you can't tell using DNA, you just need to make sure you have alot of info about a dog before you buy it

I have had Dobermans for the past 23 years, and have never had one bite anyone.  I've also had labradors, dalmations and various breeds of small dogs, all of which have bitten once in a while.  Of course any dog has the capacity to bite, but referring to a breed as having "killer instinct" is unfair.  Every dog is as individual as every human.

Everyone warns against chows and then says rotties and pit bulls are sweet, but look, this just isnt true. Although Rotties and Pit Bulls are sweet to their families, they are NOT sweet with strangers nor other animals like less dominant breeds. sure, asiatic breeds tend to be guard animals, this goes for Chows, Shar Pei's, Akitas, and most spitz-type dogs, including pomeranians. They naturally guard, but they dont naturally pick fights. Pit bulls pick fights, thats what they were bred to do. However, it should be noted that pit bulls are the most badly-bred puppy-milled dogs in existence it seems, and thus, they have many bad qualities. buy from a reputible breeder, and you'll have a better pit bull less likely to bite, the same for Chows and rotties, and any breed.

If I had to pick a kind of dog to stay away from, it'd be mini breeds and toy breeds, as well spaniels. Cocker and Springer Spaniels are known to have personality problems once they hit a certain age, Springers get whats called "Rage", where they just rip apart stuff at a moments notice for no reason. Toy breeds are yippy, high-strung and overly bred. Do not get a pomeranian for your child, little dogs hate kids, because kids can seriously hurt them.

Pitt Bulls are NOT great dogs, like their owners seem to agree on [any dog is 'harmless' to his owner, until he mauls a kid for no reason] because pitt bulls were bred to fight creatures their size. If you are their size and seem threatening, they will attack, and usually this is with kids. Chows are actually better with kids than pitt bulls and rotties, because they are much less energetic and rowdy. However, even though a pit bull will grow to love its own family, it will still attack a kid it doesnt know, as well as other dogs. Get a lab, or a lab mix, do not go getting a pitbull thinking that all the stories about them were wrong because a couple people want to flaunt their dogs off as harmless. Chow dogs are dangerous, as pitt bulls and rotties are, as well as many, MANY other breeds, if you do not socialize them. Thats why their called guard dogs, they guard. but what you have to understand is that the Chow is less a domestic dog and more a guard dog-bear hybrid with feline tendencies, so dont expect it to act like other dogs. A Pitt bull is like a Lab half the time energy-wise, a killer in a moment, but is all domestic dog.

Also, steer away from Spitz-type breeds. They are more primitive than other types, and thus can handle heavy work better, but NEED work in order to remain managable. Get a pitt bull before a malamute, because a pitt bull is much less efficient at killing than a malamute, who could live on his own quite easily. Chows are spitz-type and may have been the ancestors to all of the other spitz-types, but they arent like any other dogs around, so you'd have to know an individual before you could pass judgment. Shar-Pei's are dominant and also agressive, don't get a mastiff-shar pei mix if you don't have to. Or any shar-pei mix if possible. Shar Pei's are NOT Chows without the fur, they are not as bear-like nor as quiet and clean, although they are smaller. Chow mixes tend to be better behaved than many other kinds of mixes because chows have low energy levels in comparison to labs and such, but a purebred chow is not something I would recomend to a novice, nor would I a Pit Bull or Rott. Also, bully-breeds, such as boxers and bulldogs, have dominant personalities and need dominant owners. they do not make good family pets unless one of the people in the family is good with Bully Breeds.

Shepherd mixes are great, but tend to be shy. Lab/Shep mixes are what you really want.

the dogs most likely statistically to fatally wound from an attack are pitt bulls and rotties, but that doesnt mean that they are the ones that bite the most. It just means that they kill when they do, which may be even worse.

pure breds are actaully more likely to bite than mixed breeds, but purebreds almost always have better lives and are socialized more than mixed breeds because no one that will pay 400+ bucks for a dog is going to beat it and chain it to a tree. So, if you do treat a mixed breed like a dog SHOULD be treated, with love, it will usually make a better pet than a pure bred. And you could be saving a life.

any dog can bite, and any dog may choose not to. Its really an individual thing.

Although ANY dog can technically bite...the statistics show that Pit Bulls, Rottwielers, Shepherds, Chows, and Doberman are the dogs that are most likely to bite humans. In fact in Denver & Miami there have been new laws put into place stating that no one can own a Pit Bull due to their aggressive behavior. This is based on the number of attacks by those dogs in those areas. Now I do believe that with different owners that the behavior of the pet will ultimately be different however. Because the above dogs have been BRED to be aggressive, I feel that although having a nice owner is a good thing for these dogs, it's scary to think that one of these breeds could snap at any moment and kill innocent humans.

All pit type and all dogs have the potential to bite. What make the difference is the owners. If you get a pit know that you will have to train it through a pro. Yeah, i know you've trained a dog before, but this is a pit a you will be not only representing your pit but every other one too. They are great animals in the right hands, but can be dangerous int the wrong hands. There is no one dog that is a Killer just the owners.

There are no bad dogs just bad owners.  Most informed people hear about dog bites and the first dog that comes to their mind is a chow.  Other people who know what their relatives, friends or the media tells them think pitt bulls.  The american pitt bill terrier rates number 4 in temperment testing which is above golden retrievers, beagles, and dalmations.  anyone who says they have seen a whole yard full of mean pitt bulls have seen a whole yard full of mistreated fight dogs.  Think before you speak.  Learn before you try to prove a point.

First of all, little dogs are more prone to bite than larger breeds. No dog just automatically attacks unless the wrong behavior has been reinforced by it's owner. I've known many pit bulls. None of which were mean or had the ability to "attack". No dog will turn on its owner unless provoked. I know people say "they just snapped" and don't get me wrong, there are dogs that have a few screws loose, but generally there is more to the story than "they just snapped". They were probably provoked into doing something.

There are actually studies done that show a Chihuahua is more likely to bite you than ANY other dog.. They are nervous, anxious dog that will snap at most anything.

YOU train the dog. People with "dangerous breeds" (i,e. Pitt Bulls, Doberman, Rottweilers, and Dane) Are actually FORCED to be more cautious do to stereotyping of them and their dogs.

Granted people misuse and abuse the dogs BECAUSE of their size and power. Blame that on the HUMAN, Not the dog!

APBT are NOT dangerous if trained properly.  I was attacked by a poodle when I was a child and my husband was dragged and mauled by a St. Bernard.  We now have an APBT along with a cockatoo, cat and our 10 year old daughter.  He is loyal and friendly.  I would not suggest adopting an adult APBT without spending plenty of time with it to see its temperment.  You don't know who owned it previously and how they treated it.

I own a pure bred red-nose gator pit bull. I also own a gorilla pit, which is a mix of a bull mastiff and a pit bull. both are very sweet dogs that i trust completely. they have been socialized since they were first born. I take them to parks and community get-togethers, and i let them play with my neices and nephews. i also raised them to be friendly to other dogs. more than a few times while walking my dogs, another stray has ran up to them and they have done nothing but look at them, or play if i let them. i do understand that pits can bite, i know a few that would. i have friends that have taught their dogs to growl at people by holding their necks and shaking them at people and dogs since they were pups. i also know a lab like that and a rat terrior. so my point is, the dog will act the way it was taught to act since puppy hood. socializing is very important.

But sometimes dogs get scared and some dogs and guard dogs but you didn't teach them to guard you. If someone comes near you and you are very connected to your dog it probably will bite the person. ANY breed can bite!  I work at a shelter and see the biter dogs on a regular basis.  Labradors and Cockers are some of the most common biters.  Pit Bulls are great dogs, I own them myself.  When one comes in on a bite case it is usually involving another animal, not a human.  I have not seen a doberman in on a bite case in the 4yrs I have worked here.

The dogs most likely to bite will be your unaltered, unsocialized, untrained dogs of any breed!

In general small dogs (toy's and such)bite and there little teeth are like razors but they don't get the press. Pits only get a bad rap because the ones that get noticed are the ones with jerk owners. Rots tend to turn and bite with no warning wen over age 5. Chows are the only true fighting dog that need no conditioning to be so. Akita's and Blue Healer's haven't ban bread down enough, but good dogs can come from all breeds.

To make a good dog, socialize, socialize, socialize, correct negative behavior toward people and animals, and be the leader not the follower, dogs are natural born followers. Any dog will bite. The breeds most likely to bite unprovoked are small breed dogs. Most large dogs will bite only if provoked. The majority of dogs will growl before it bites. I own 2 pit bulls, I have been raised with pit bulls, and I work with pit bulls on a daily basis. I have been bitten twice in my lifetime, first it was by a chow pup, the second time it was by a lab. So please don't discriminate, any dog with teeth has the potential to bite.

like alot of other people said the owner makes the dog is SO true go ahead and buy them just remember stern consistent training not abuse know your limits and the dogs and if you are looking for a place to live look up breed restrictions because a lot of places i think about 99% follow it aggression starts some where whether it is just a simple look of fear or if it starts with play biting and do research of the breeds i have met and don't forget proper socialization too that is the key there is always a link to aggression like my dog is both protective too much and has dominance issues plus her would kill a little dog if he could only because he is constantly teased by our neighbors Chihuahuas all the time but other than that he is a sweet angel who loves our 3 month old

Any dog is just as probable as the next to bite some one. I would trust a rotti over a cocker spaniel or a golden. It doesn't matter so much as how the owner treats the dog as it does the temperament of that specific breeding. A dog will not bite you purely because it doesn't like you, it will avoid you. I own an Alaskan Malamute and I work in a large breed kennel.  My dog is the sweetest gentle giant I know, but if someone comes at me he will bite and hurt them.
Biting is the only defense a dog has, so if it's scared and you've cornered it, it's going to bite.  If it's aggressive due to the owner teaching it to be it will bite, it can also be aggressive due to degenerate breeding in the lines which will cause a deformity in the way the brain works.
You want a dog that's guaranteed not to bite get a stuffed animal.
You want a dog that is mentally and temperamentally stable, do you're homework, research the breed, talk to people who own the breed and breeders to see what they say to expect. Also keep in mind that a breed book from the local book store is more than likely going to tell you only good things about the breed.  EVERY BREED HAS PROS AND CONS THAT IT COMES WITH!

Any dog will bit it depends on how you train the dog if you abouse the dog or dont feed it it will most likely not be the safest dog.  I have two Pit Bulls and they would never bite anyone that does not treat them badly. ANY DOG WILL BITE!

Any dog can bite.  Any dog WILL bite in a situation where they feel extremely threatened.

More or less likeliness all depends on environment, breeding, treatment the dog receives in life, and owners.  Bad living conditions will make a dog more likely to bite.  Inter-breeding and BAD breeding will make a dog more unstable and more likely to bite.  Poor treatment and bad owners will make a dog more likely to bite.  Certain training and conditioning will as well.

When trying to figure out whether a dog is more likely to bite or not, you must look at the dog itself ALONE.  You cannot look a breed and say 'oh, those dogs bite a lot'.  That's stupid, that's ignorant.  Think before you judge.

With some exception, most dogs won't bite unless provoked. I have an Akita and outside the fence she is an angel, but if some one were to come in my yard uninvited they would get bitten. I think people need to be more dog smart,we teach personal protection in school, why not dog smarts. Like staring at a pretty dog, in their language that means "I want to fight you" and we wonder why we get bitten!

I have owed many dogs, all mine have been nothing but gentle. But I did have one that we only kept for a year not because he would hurt us he loved us to much he would not let anyone near me, not even my husband without my say so, he was very gentle with kids but he was rather large rotti bull mastiff and could easily kill some one so i had to put him down. So any dog can bite but if you realise a dog can be a danger and see any signs you have to be responsible and put down the dog. I know this cause I am almost a dog bite victim when I was eight I almost lost my eye to a german shepard which I had know for years. But I hold no grudge to the breed, I now owe one and breed her.

Pibulls, Dobermans, Rottwieler, and any other "viscious dogs" are just as likely to attack or bite as a chihuahua or a lab. The titles people give them is just a bunch of poo. "Oh they will turn on you with no warning" is totally wrong. If a dog shows any king of aggression it's because they feel threatened, so its the owners falt that many of the attacks are forced by threats. Not only do these dogs protect their owners but they also need to protect themselves. Some of you may have heard that pitbulls were used for dogfighting AS A SPORT. It's their instinct, not to kill, but to show a sign of never giving up and dedication. Have you ever heard of the "locking jaw" myth. Well it's just one of those things that resembles breedism, or descrimination against a certain breed. Pitbulls jaw structure is just as any other dogs, and it's scientifically proven. If you've seen Pitbulls fight other dogs it's because they were trained to do so in England many years back. This was what they considered a sport called dogfighting, which people placed bets on. They were taught not to bite a human hand. This helped so that the owners can easily separate the dogs without getting bit. As Vicki Hearne said, "It is true that Pit Bulls grab and hold on. But what they most often grab and refuse to let go of is your heart, not your arm."

any dog will bite you but breeds like (especially)pit bulls, rotties, dobermans, etc just happen to have the worst bite.  in a list of 100 dogs most likely to bite you, pits bulls were 4th...from the bottom. do the research and leave the pit bulls alone.

YOU KNOW I GET SO TIRED OF THE ROTTWEILER GETTING A BAD RAP BECAUSE OF WHAT SOCIETY THINKS THIS DOG IS ABOUT. YOU TO OFTEN THAN NOT HERE THEIR INSTINCT IS TO KILL WELL LETS GO AHEAD AND CORRECTLY RESTATE THIS MISCONCEPTION... ITS WHAT EACH AND EVERY SINGLE DOG THAT IS BORN HAS AND IT IS CALLED PREY DRIVE, NOT KILLING DRIVE OR ANYTHING ELSE. ALL DOGS HAVE IT, SOME IS MORE PRONOUNCED DUE TO THE BREEDS AND IT DEPENDS ON WHAT AND HOW YOU RAISE YOUR DOG TO EITHER BE A WORKING DOG OR A FAMILY PET. PEOPLE IN GENERAL THAT LABEL DOGS ARE STUPID FOR THIS REASON WHETHER ITS A ROTTI OR A PITT OR A LAB TO A YORKE, ALL DOGS WILL BITE YES THE LARGER BREED ARE MORE SERIOUS FOR THAT FACT THEY ARE BIG DOGS BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE THE ONLY DOGS THAT BITE... ALL DOGS BITE..............................................

What makes me angry is the fact that people are so ignorant about the actual breed its self. I am a dog trainer and im telling you something right now i have been bit by more labs and german shepards than any pit bull , rotweiler, doberman whatever you ignorant people consider and "Aggressive" breed these dogs were not bred to kill as you may think. Pit bulls were actually bred to save  soldiers lives  in world war 1 i believe. Some killer huh? How about calling these people that train these dogs to kill the killer? So instead of stating ignorant and false statements why doesn't everybody do there research?????

How come Staffies are known to be one of the best dogs to have around kids but a pit bull will kill your kids for no reason. I always thought they were the same breed. ???? Dobbermans and rottwielers that kill because its in there genes. Huh... I heard that myth about Pits but huh. I can tell you did your research. Look its the deed not the breed. Blame the owners not the breed of dog. I dont know about Dobermans but pit bulls and rots make great pets. If your afraid of getting bitten stay away from chiwawas or labs because they are more likley to bite you. If you want to learn more about a breed obviously you have access to a computer look it up or some dum dum will end up telling you what they think they know...Tanisha...jeez you probably dont even own a dog....Jun Jun

I own a Pitt bull and a boxer, they are the sweetest dogs and very well behaved. If you actually look up the "list" of dogs that bite- cockerspaniels are at the top with Labrador retrivers.
Just a note
I grew up with labs and golden retrievers- they are great but love my pitt way more- they are owner pleasers- it is us as humans that make them what they are- do some research before coming to incorrect conclusions about things.

True.  All dogs bite.  Someone compared pitts and rotts to cocker spaniels,THIS IS CRAZY!  The damage caused is what people worry about.  Rott, pitts, and akitas are aggressive breeds, but I agree the owner plays a big part though
