Hi I bought a set of Marx trains circa late 30's.They have the oddest couplers. Not he handshake type or the tab(original coupler)but a coupler thats like a horseshoe it is spring loaded and it fits over a metal hub when its coupled..and the caboose has a light in it. There is a shoe under the caboose that runs along the track picking up electricity for the light. Can you help me

It sounds as if your Marx set has what is often called "one-way" latch coupler cars. That is, the cars will face only one way if coupled. These are commonly found couplers. Your lighted caboose is not commonly found. if it is an 8-wheel, one-way coupler 556 red caboose -ie, like the rest of the cars appear to be - I have never, in 25 years of Marx collecting, seen an authentic factory -lighted caboose of that nature and vintage. That does not mean Marx did not make one. One never says never with Marx. Marx made a lot of pieces we are just now finding out about. If your lighted caboose is factory, it sounds rare indeed, even more so if it's in excellent condition. I expect your engine is a Canadian Pacific type - a 391 or 397 or 494 or 495 - frequently found but still desirable in excellent condition.
A fairly nice custom Marx-type lighted caboose, not factory but still pretty nice, can be seen at www.leeworks.addr.com. That site has some pretty stuff displayed.
   Best, Lee Reynolds
