What is the gestation for the heat period in labs? At what age do they stop? How long does each period last? Do they have a type of diaper for dogs at this time?

Like I've said before you can't put a time frame on it. Dogs go into heat every 4-14(average 6)months and heat can last from less than a week to as long as a month. There are two stages in this. Going into heat(average 9 days, range 1-17 days),and in heat(average 9 days, range 3-21 days). Pregnancy lasts 58-66 days from the first day of mating. I'm not sure when dog's go into menopause but I think I've heard of a "doggie pad" before. Asking your vet. Hope this helps. Tanisha

They sell belts of numerous sizes and designs at any pet store.  The belts will accomodate a human pad/liner.

I would just like to respond to Judith Cramer's question up above.  When our lab is in heat, we buy adult size pull ups and cut a hole in the back for her tail.  The look on her face is of humiliation, but it allows her to move freely through the house.

I have a female labrador retriever and have found that buying training pants (they sell these at Target/WalMart) for a child works best for me.  I then cut a round hole in the back for my lab's tail.  She will take off anything else.  Also the pads with belts don't cover enough area for my very active lab.

I buy depends undergarments, or training pants for toddlers and cut a hole big enough for the tail and hiney hole. It helps to use duck tape to hold them on.  Change frequently and let your dog outside with supervision several times a day. Mackie and Sable are yellow labs, and Sable is expecting her first litter in a month.  Labs are the greatest.
