i have a 1982 bmw 320I..the emergency/turn signal indicator...

i have a 1982 bmw 320I..the emergency/turn signal indicator switch wouldn't stay in off mode..i bought a new switch (which at first was very tight) and within 2 weeks the same thing happened again...i thought there was a spring or something that would catch and keep the emergency flashing mode off..but that doesn't seem to be the case..i bought a new battery thinking the battery was bad but found out that the switch drained the battery power to nothing..now when i try to push the switch button it won't stay in and keeps popping out...does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?
