My 1996 Neon AC compressor whined before it ran out of coolant which meant that the AC stopped cooling the air. An AC mechanic told me that the coolant had all leaked out and the whine was likely the sound of the coolant leaking out.

I think my 2001 dodge stratus has the same problem. At first I thought it was the coolant... a mechanic said I would need to replace the AC compressor. How much would this cost? Is this something I can do easily myself to save some $$$? ... or is there something else I can to fix the problem?
