I have a 5 month old JRT who REFUSES to give any indication of when he needs to go outside to relieve himself. He knows going outside is good (gets treats) and inside is bad (bad dog) but will not let us know when he needs to go out. Any advice?

just went through this and here is what i did to solve this problem:  my male (6 mos) and my female (7 mos) were going whenever and where ever they wanted to.  They knew right after going inside it was bad and they knew that if they went outside to come over for a treat, but still had pee and poo everywhere inside.  Drastic times, drastic measures.  I pulled up the carpet in a larger closet to the cement floor.  I bought puppy pads ($32 @ petsmart for 100).  I also had to put a large moveable cage in the closet to protect the walls.  I put in their small cage and a pet bed and puppy pads on the floor.  I started to lock them up ANYTIME they were to be left alone, no matter how long, even at night.  When i would find they had gone on the paper, i brought them to the paper and told them "good".  I also put puppy pads in the common areas that they would seem to "go" in.  If i found poo on the floor, i pointed them at it and said "no"  then put the poo on the pad and said "good"  I reduced trips outside to 2-3 times daily for only a few minutes.  ALso eliminated walks for a while (i know, its drastic, but they wanted to go outside to play, not potty.  immense inside excercise had to happen). Well, after about 2 weeks, i have paper trained puppies.  My female is about 80% paper trained and my male is 99% trained.  They will run to the paper to go when they have to.  I caught my female peeing on the carpet and simply said "no!" and she ran to the paper and went, and then she got lots of pets and praise.  I also found that talking to them like they are people that understand english helps.  If they disappoint me, i simply tell them how upset i am and they seem to understand.  good luck.  be smarter than your jack!

try putting a bell on the door that your dog can reach.... and every time you go outside ring the bell before you open the door... it might take a few weeks but he should start ringing it when he needs to go... everyone thought my shepherd was the smartest dog ever.

My puppy was also hard to train, but I found a crate and a little coaxing was pretty much all it took. She is now 9 months old and completly house broken.  She even barks at us when she wants to go out.

You can also teach your Jack a cue word or words for relieving himself.  I use "take a break" take your dog outside and walk him in an area where he may want to go to the bathroom and repeat "take a break" keep saying it repeatedly especially if he goes.
After he is done get really excited and give lots of praise and love. After about a week he will probably know it then you can begin to ask him if he wants to go outside to take a break and take him outside and encourage him to take a break and then praise him. Remember to make it a big deal when he does well. Every time your dog has an accident in the house that will reinforce him to do it again in the house.  Remember Jacks are small dogs and with a small dog the quicker the fluids and solids go through them especially when they are young and playing and eating and drinking a great deal.

I have a 2 year old I just got and it's a JRT.  She only goes poo in the house.  I try talking to her and  telling her how sad I am she did that.  She will not go when I'm in the house only my wife.  She also won't tell us if she has to go half the time.  She will go outside then come in and go poo in the bedroom.  It's been going on to long and I'm getting a shock collar from my friend.  I have no choice but to.  We have electric fence and she'll no it's bad when she gets zapped.  We have another male and he's really good about telling us and never has mistakes in the house.  She wasn't properly potty trained before we got her.
You should get baby changing pads or adult.  They are only $5 for 50.  That's what we use.  We got a new puppy.  We got a doggy kennel.  It's made for house breaking.  It says not to use it but we are going to put changing pads so he will go in there not on the carpet.

I used pup pads & it worked.  My pup goes on the pup pads & goes to the door to let me know she is ready to go out. As far as how....buy the grass scented pup pads(petsmart)and put your pup on the pad several times a day.  Then, when your pup goes in the house you let them know "bad dog" & put them immediatle yon the pup pad.  Then when the dog goes on the pup pad make sure to praise it & give a treat.  As far as outside...take the dog out so much that they will go & associate the outside w/pottying. Always praise.  It takes patience & praise.
