Aerobic Exercises at least 30 minutes every other day (or everyday if you can).  Avoid saturated fat (like the one in red meat), and in Milk products such as butter.  Eat low fat food.  Eat unsaturated fat such as  olive oil, sunflower and peanut. If you are overweight, you need to reduce your weight to the normal range.  You can use the BMI (the weight vs. the height) to find if you are overweight, but you need also to consider your body frame (small, medium or high).

HDL is supposed to be high.  It's the LDL that should be low.

Khalifa: your answer relates more to how to lower your LDL and not on how to increase your HDL. Aerobic exercise will increase your HDL, but avoiding certain foods will not. Flax seed will increase your HDL.

I ate oatmeal everyday and lowered my cholesterol from 216 to 187 to 100 in two months.  HDL is 45 and triglycerides are a little high at 212.  But, considering what they were.  Not bad.

1. Be a vegetarian. Solve a lot of your health problems.
2. Yoga, Meditation, Tai Chi or Qi Gong.
3. Laugh. See a lot of comedies and jokes
4. Shout. Shout very loud in the morning at the top of a mountain or in the forest if you can. These vibrations can protect your internal organs and cause them to reduce stress and anger which ar the main contributors to heart disease, stroke and increase blood pressure.

It is important to exercise regularly and make dietary choices which include more fruits and vegetables, nuts, whole grains and fatty fish.  Making these lifestyle changes will not only increase your HDL (the good fat) but also reduce your LDL (the bad fat).
