Perception is key to the way of the shaman; to the extent a chemical heightens or dulls perception, the chemical ingested will have an effect. In the early works of Carlos Castaneda, for example, ingesting peyote was presented as a doorway to perceiving non-ordinary reality; but in his later works, he reported that Don Juan told him that was only necessary for particularly obtuse people. It can help or harm, depending on the specific drug. Generally, if one can dream, one can journey into non-ordinary reality; if the prescription medication allows dreaming, or conscious participation/retention of dreaming or a dream-like (trance) state, then it should have no negative effect. All the chemicals we need to journey shamanically are stored in our bodies naturally. Various tools and techniques are used to maximize their effectiveness.
