I have a 1995 Jetta.  I have to hold down "mode" and "scan" for three seconds, then put in the code using the 1-4 on the radio, and then hold "mode" and "scan" down for three hours again.  It worked for me and I was shocked!

In my 1998 Jetta TDI, after the code is entered you must hold down the tuning button, not the scan button, for three seconds to get the stereo to unlock.

i found instead of waiting 3 hours to try your 'safe mode' code again, i disconnected my battery cables, and then put them back on. this seemed to reset the radio.

The number shows how many times you have tried to put the code in.  On my 2k Jetta, you get 2 tries, and then the stereo locks in "safe" mode for one hour (It says safe and the number 2).  You need to leave the keys in and the radio on for that hour and then it will let you try another number.

I had the safe mode problem with my 98 Jetta. I had to hold mode and scan at the same time, wait for 1000 to appear then enter code using 1-4. Hold mode and scan until the word SAFE appears, then it worked.
Hope this helps

If mine gave me the stereo "safe mode" option that'd be great.  The battery went dead after I left the lights on, no big deal, I jumped it and I was off.  I try to use the radio, and it turns on, says 88.3 and nothing else.  Buttons, volume knob do absolutely nothing.  I left it on for an hour while I was driving somewhere far but that didn't seem to unlock anything.  Any suggestions on getting the dumb radio to respond?

I have a 98 Wolfsberg, and everytime the battery is disconnected the stereo goes to "SAFE" mode.  I received a code at the dealership and it has worked everytime.  BUT contrary to claims to hold down the "SCAN" button, I have found that holding the "SEEK >" button enters your code.

For a 97 VW, hold SCAN and MODE for 3 seconds, then enter the code using the preset keys (1 through 4).  When the code is entered, hold SCAN and MODE again for 3 seconds.
