Hi Monica, yes it's a real breed. It's from the Netherlands. Comes in four colors and three hair types. Dates to the 1700's and used a lot for protection. My daughter's Mother in law has several. Very sweet and fun dogs.

Two days ago we put our Dutch Shepard to sleep after twelve wonderful years. Loyal, honest and courageous. Wonderful with the grandchildren and the best dog I have ever had. We put her to sleep ourselves at home out of respect. She earned a dignified end. I am now searching for a good breeder. All of our dogs have been rescue animals chosen not by breed but by need, however I feel so strongly about this particular dog that I would like another Dutch Shepard. dwilson@phs1.org

Yes,yes, yes.I am very proud to be a friend of Girly-grrrrl,a two year old long haired Dutch Shepard. She is the most alert, compassionate, and loving friend I have ever had.The breed is extremely intelligent, and loyal. She is a bit of a show off as well, with her own dog sense of humor.I found her at a shelter in Boulder,CO.as a pup.She loves others, and people too.

Dutchies are excellent dog's. Please choose yours carefully as they do have VERY strong personalities and, as with all breeds of dogs, if you get a particularly dominant one you might be in for a ride.
Seek out several breeders and plan on spending no less then $5-600 to a couple thousand. Make sure you can varify their genetic line also as they are starting to become popular and some unscrupulous breeders will breed to close within the lines. The Belgian Manlinios' are another strain of the Shepard and also great dogs.

Good Luck!

Monica,
I had the privilege of having a drug detection dog which was a Dutch Shepard. He, Rocco, was a short haired Dutch Shepard with a black muzzle and tiger stripes on both sides. Rocco worked for eight years and had a distinguished career. At age 11 he retired. The following year I retired as well. Rocco went deaf and got an infection in his digestive track. He fought valiantly for three years.  Rocco's quality of life had diminished and he deserved better. I finally had to put him down. Not a happy day. Rocco was the best partner I had in 30 years of law enforcement. You will enjoy your Dutch Shepard if you choose this wonderful breed.

I have a Dutch Shepard but didn't know he was one until last year when a neighbor showed me a picture that looked just like my dog Lucky. He is so loyal, kind, gentle, loving, learns quickly. I have the short hair, black muzzle, tiger stripes. He is 6 years old. He was abandened with his brothers and sisters in front of a pass job. All the puppies were adopted. I am so lucky to have adopted Lucky into my life.

They are used more for Police Use and Military use,They have been bread for this purpose starting in the 1800's, that is why you don't here mutch about them. They are becoming more popular becaause they want to please us and they are very  protective of their family, and very excelent with childern, They are fun, lovable, and protective, and fearless of anything..

I HAVE A DUTCH SHEPARD AND SHE IS THE BEST WATCH DOG i HAVE EVER HAD, YET VERY GENTLE WITH THE KIDS AND BABIES IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD! SHE LOVES TO PLAY, BUT KNOWS WHEN IT IS NOT PLAY TIME. BEST DOG i HAVE EVER OWNED, GOT HER WHEN SHE WAS 7 WEEKS AND NOW SHE IS 2 YEARS OLD. I GOT HER FOR FREE, PICKED HER OUT OF A BIN OF PUPPIES, I DID NOT KNOW THE BREED EITHER AT THAT TIME, SHE WAS JUST THE CUTEST AND THE SMALLEST ONE IN THERE AND I COULD NOT PASS HER UP, I GUESS THE OWNER OF THE MOTHER DID NOT KNOW WHAT SHE HAD EITHER. SURE AM GLAD I WENT TO THE STORE THAT MORNING!   RXPUSHER777@AOL.COM

I had a dutch shephard named dutchess unfortunatly she passed away at only 3 yrs old.She was very loving and it destroyed everyone in the family when she died. She was very good at searching for my sons when we went to the park if i would walk off w/them.She was very over protective expecially of my  sons. She went to k-9
training and loved to do rag work.thats where we found out she was a dutch the 1st time we ever heard of the breed ourselves she was brindle in color and a smaller build of the german shephard. We actually aquired her from a bull rescue we were surprised to find out how much they go for ourselves.

I was a proud owner of a dutch Shepard, he was the most loyal and compassionate dog I have ever known. Unfortunately he was a bit of a wonderer and has been missing for over a year!! Anyone who met "whompis" fell in love with him, he is very missed by many especially me. If I ever own another dog it will defiantly be the same breed!
