Try a newspaper, I have a JR, she will be 2 in May ,I have never spanked her with a news paper, but the poping sound scares her. If she is doing something wrong all I have to say is I will get a newspaper and she chills down.JRT'S are very smart and learn easy.

I would try using  "Quiet" it is a cue word that is trained. There are a few ways of training this but the crate is a good way. Put the dog in the crate and set the dog up.  If you know of something that will cause him to bark while in the crate then when he does hit the side of the crate with an open hand and say "Quiet" firmly. The bang noise shocks them and they quickly learn that word.  Then you can use it whenever you Jack gets out of hand.

jack russells are like children. you must be consistent. our jack barks at anyone walking by within 10 feet from our home. i simply Tell him "no barky" which is what we have said since he was 8 weeks old. he does understand and stops. he does respect what we do inspect. consistency is the key and rewards for good behavior is a must.

JRT's are very verbal dogs.  it's part of their personality i love about mine.  nothing will shut Zeke up although i have never resorted to spanking, or caging etc.  thank god for tolerable neighbors!  I did however use the squirt gun method on my kids when they were young.  they would just laugh and run away.  that worked on them.

The barkin' thing we have under control.  The problem is now the dogs have the numbers.  My girlfriend has a 3 yr old JRT female named Buggie(Boogie),and i just added Pez a 3 month old male.  Buggie is good, aside from refusing to "go potty outside" as we tell her at least 50 times a day.  Pez pretty much has this down the issue with him though is he's a whiner. We say no and about 30 seconds later he's back whining it up again.  Not sure if this is just because he's still a pup or if something can be done about it.  Anyone with any suggestions for Buggie or Pez please let me know.

Jack Russell's have long childhoods.  The potty thing, they get eventually, just be consistent.  A shake can can work for the barking (you can do it from any room in the house) Take a soda can, put a small hand full of pebbles or pennies in it and tape the end shut.  When the dog barks, say no and shake the can.  The sound usually stops them, it is loud and something to distract them.  For the person with the biting dog: hitting the dog won't cure (when does violence ever cure violence?)  You have a serious problem and you need to get in with a good trainer.  Do it soon, before someone gets hurt really bad.  For the idiot with the gun complex.  Just shoot yourself in the head and spare the rest of us.

i just bought my JRT 3 days ago, and she is 2 mos. old, and she already listens to me and knows her name, she is very smart. she loves to be rocked and cuddled and i guess i treat her like a baby, but love and presistance i think is the key to anything and everything. she is a baby, and i will treat her with the same kindness as a child. they have to learn and they have to feel loved and secured, then you can except the same.

I don't have an answer for barking, i need help in barking also, but my little girls are so smart,  I have had one of JRT since it was 6 weeks old and she is four now, (Tipper) i have a young girl (Sasi) she is 8 months old.  Tipper is the boss and Sassi lets her this is okay. I have a fenced in large yard and it is very hard to stop them from barking, they bark at everything, birds, leaves, and people in the neighbors yard.  Would you think it will hurt them to use shock bark collars?

Jacks need ATTENTION and lots of it! I have an 11,8 and a 4 year old. A happy Jack is a tired Jack. If you give then what they really need they you should have a happy Jack. These wonderful little dogs are no lap dogs unless they want it that way. I just wish people would reaserch the breed they are interested in before making a terrible mistake. Personally I think JACKS RULE!!!!!

Jack Russell cross - 4 months - hmmm - he bites, he barks, he decides when he'll pee and poop outside or inside on any given day.  He's adorable at times, lots of personality and very smart and loves to  play fetch and loves to go for long walks outside.  We are muzzling him for five minutes here and there to stop the biting and barking - sometimes we just show him the muzzle and he stops.  The potty stuff is very frustrating but getting better - any tips for a quicker results on the bathroom habits?

This depends of the kind of barking.  Jack Russells have a lot of energy and they MUST use it.  Threatening with something they find unpleasant like a squirt or a shake can train them to not bark at the neighbor and stuff like that, but recreational barking (just howling for a half an hour for no reason) is different.  They need to get something out of their system somehow and if you run the dog outside often enough or get him into recreational chewing instead of barking, that helps to relieve that stored-up energy.

but i think people who are saying shoot them or spank them are out of order. i think you should never hit a dog and if u do you are the ones who need shooting. if u cant handle it why get a dog in the first place

CONSISTENCY, i have a JRT he is 4 months old he is so cute, I have got the respect out of him, so i don't have a problem shutting him up, I have learned to calmly say no and when he tries me i show him who is boss and who feeds and cares for him so i don't back down..... Once you bond and find a way of getting their attention and try not to yell at him, until he is really bad and is not listening then you demand him to come to you and i have started by counting and once i say 2 i have more authority in my voice i might not give up and start it all over again but normally now after constantly working with him and when i get to 2 about 6 times he will even humble and come to me slowly with his little tail between his legs or he tries me and then i grab him up and spank his butt like my kids. tell him that when i say come you come and tell him he is being bad and tell him he is going into his cage...This dog must have a cage...that gets his attn., but my problem is POTTY TRAINING oh my goodness someone please help.....

A quick and loud whistle makes our Russell
stand at attention and stop what you want
and come running to you with a wagging tail and plenty of kisses. We found this after age 2 after my husbands surgery when he was
only just in the way by trying to be loving.
It has worked better than any other obedience we have tried, especially to stop barking, come, stay and stop. We wished to have known earlier, he has been none other than such a loving soul.

I think people need to spend a bit more time reading up on what type of breed they intend on purchasing before they run out to the petshop. JRTS are not only vocal but very very active dogs that require a lot of attention. They need to be kept busy constantly.  As for the barking, as someone said above "There dogs, they bark".......enough said.

JR's are extrememly smart as we all know who own them.  So for that reason especially, the owner must established the she is the Alpha female (male if your a man),  Absolutely no biting/growling is allowed or I pick her up by the scruff of the neck (like her mom used to) and say NO (low and strong).  Did that maybe three times when she was a pup - she is the gentlest dog around! Loves all dogs, kids etc... no problem picking up her food while she's eating etc.  Barking - use either muzzel or the low battery shock collar.  It works great! I grew up with horses all my life, and they learn fast that there is an electric fence and not go through it.  It does not hurt them, it's not cruel, it's humane.  It is better than  constantly yelling at your dog.  They should be over the barking w/in 2 wks.  And remember to play with your dog...have fun with them, they are pack animals.

I have a four year old JRT, and I have found squirting her with water is the best method. I also try to pet her (firmly) and look her directly in the eye. This usually makes her feel safe and stops the barking. I do not think that hitting your dog is a good idea!

Mine is 11 years old, and she finally stopped running.  She now walks off leash.  And she barks at me when she's out of water, and when she's  hungry, or want to go for a walk.  She barks when she see me putting on my running shoes because she is so excited.  When other people are walking by or other dogs, is say Shhhh and look at her.  She stops.  How I came to this is when a dog was passing by and she went crazy I put her on her back and my right hand gripping her throat with litter pressure.  She new that I was the boss, and the little words Shhhh, make her obey me.  While she's on her back, say the word that you want her to understand, mine was Shhhh.
good luck, and when she's gone, I'llget another one.

JRT'sare all different.  Yes they are mainly alike and love to bark.  The squirt gun exercise doesn't work on my dog.  She just eats the water frantically, basically she loves it, as well as the hose.(Try this in the summer, its funny) Finally, she ate the squirt gun when I wasn't watching.

To all, Our neighbors bought two JR'sfrom a local pet farm....very little thought about breed or what training them entails. For the past three months we've been unable to watch TV or since I work from my home talk to clients without them disrupting the calls. We have a good relationship with the neighbors AND WANT TO HELP THEM SINCE WE KNOW THEY ARE EQUALLY AT WITS END.. Has anyone any experience with Ultrasonic devices which can be mounted in the backyard? Alternately has any one had a JR debarked? If so was it effective and would you recommend it?  Goin crazy quick!

My JR does not stop barking unless I have the bark collar on him.  He barks at dogs going by and if anyone comes near the house.  We tried everything and if we use a news paper he just gets more aggressive, so the bark collar is the only thing that has worked.  It only has to make a beep sound - no shock, and he is quiet.
