Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM) is the making of parts or products, usually mechanically, and this is controlled by computer eg. CAM is used in the manufacturing of aeroplane parts and cars. The first advantages of Computer Aided Manufacture are in the design and specification of the product. Due to the fact that there are few people involved in the actual manufacture there is very little room for mistakes and precision engineering is used (this means that precise measurements are input into the CAM machines so that exact holes, sizes, etc are used). Secondly, CAM is a fairly cost efficient programme once initial purchases have been made. The CAM machines do not require heating, lighting, holidays or sick days so continuous 24 hour work can be maintained. CAM machines can also make proto-types, this means that if a new plane has been designed and tested using CAD (Computer Aided Design), then CAM could make a precise, small scale version of this plane so that further tests could take place. This is a cost and time saving activity as most problems could be identified before major work starts. A disadvantage of using CAM is initially down to the expense of installing the machines and the Computer Aided Design software. To buy CAD and CAM programmes is costly and may require a great deal of investment by the business. CAM machines can break down, although they do not need days off, they do require maintenance and constant supervision to ensure they are working in the best possible way. They also require specialist maintenance teams to control and update their systems. Training people to work on CAD /CAM is expensive and also very specialist so staff are in short supply.

Advantages � Cad/Cam is faster � It is cheaper � More precise � Computer Numerical Control (what sends the data from the CAD program to the CAM machine) allows you to turn your CAD drawings into either a finished product or a 3D computer model which can be tested for structural weaknesses, etc. � Wide engineering drawing capabilities. � Reliable source of software for engineers. � 3D detailed drawing. � Computerised model to scale. � Test without having to produce it. � Drawings are device independent. � You can resize easily by using calculation. � More economical and efficient. � Smaller files than bitmapped images. � Easier to see the characteristics. � You can see the image in animation so you can get the feeling of it without having to build it. Disadvantages � You have to learn to use the software

CAM/CAM machinery is used in the majority of industry now, it plays a major part in keeping the cost of a product down. CAM/CAM means a company does not have to employ people to work 24/7. Although there is a high initial cost in installing a CAD/CAM system the money is soon made back by not having to pay staff to do the work that machines and computers are doing. However designers that can use the CAD/CAM effectively are expensive to hire, this is still cheaper than employing many people to do the manual jobs. Another advantage of CAD/CAM is that every product is exactly the same as the last as the machines are controlled by a computer and not a person there is not going to be any variation in quality.

There are a few advantages and disadvantages to using CAD (Computer Aided Design). The main advantage to using CAD is that you get a better quality drawing. For example, you can choose a variety of text for your drawing. If you were drawing an engineering plan, you may choose to use block lettering. On the otherhand, if you were doing an architectural drawing, you may choose to use a chiselpoint text. CAD also lets you pick a variety of different symbols for materials such as wood, marble, stucco, tile, etc. Another advantage is that you might get some business from redoing older drawings on CAD. There is a lot of old buildings that need renovations and some of them may need their plans upgraded on CAD. Also, some companies may want their plans on disk so they have them on file. One disadvantage to using CAD for a small business would be its cost for equipment and training. The Autocad program itself is over �1500 and other CAD programs run at about the same price. You also need to get one or more computers to run CAD which will cost you �1500 plus per computer. Another cost is training for you and your employees. Classes can cost you up to a few thousand per person. Another disadvantage you might want to consider is the cost of reduced productivity in the beginning. It takes a lot of practice to become proficient in CAD. You may find your business has slowed in productivity because of it. In my opinion, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. In this world of competitive business, you need to be able to compete with larger companies. The advantages of Cad are that it's faster, easier, cheaper and precise. The disadvantages of CAD/CAM are that you have to learn the software behind each. For CAD learn Auto CAD or something, and for CAM you need to learn Master CAM. This is Computer Numerical Control software that allows you to turn your Auto CAD Drawings to a finished product...

The Advantages that CAD has brought have affected the engineering industry in a huge way due to its wide use of engineering drawing capabilities. CAD is a cheap and faster method of designing a product, being cost effective CAD is a more reliable source of software for engineers.
