Has anyone had any experience with using the
medication called "amitriptyline" for a dog
that constantly licks the same spot on his leg and causes a sore to appear? The vet I
saw today wanted to inject a cortisone type
medication in the area (under sedation) and
then repeat it two weeks later. I don't want
to go that route and have heard good things
about the drug I mentioned earlier. Any help
with this would be appreciated.

Amitriptyline is a very safe drug with very few side effects. Sometimes dog's constantly lick for behavioral reasons. Maybe this is the reason your vet prescribed this drug. My dog is on amitriptyline for interstitial(sp?)cystitis. The drug also works to help calm the bladder muscle. Elavil is another name for the drug which is an anti-depressant. I hope I was of some help. Bye.

your dog may also have allergies, which is the reasoning for the cortisone.
amitryptiline is a sedative.
