We have a yorkie who is 2 years old.  We have found it extremely difficult to train him to go outside to urinate.  We have used a crate but did not seem to work.  What ideas do you have to help us?

Yorkies are not the easiest dogs to potty train. Crate training usually works. But you should never leave them in the crate for more than about 4 hours during the day. If you have to leave them longer, I would suggest a larger pen. Put a washable potty pad in one corner, food in another corner, toy in another corner and bed in the 4th corner. Some people use regular play pens. Depends upon the size of the yorkie and if they can jump out. She/he might prefer to potty inside on a potty pad. http://www.miracleyorkies.com

My yorkie pup came paper trained when I got her at 3 months. If the puppy is paper trained, litter training will be cake.  I laid down paper on the floor and put the litter box on top of the newspaper, leaving enough paper around the litter box for the puppy to still use. When I noticed her using the paper, I would simply pick her up and set her in the litter box to finish. Make sure you catch her every time. Within 2 days she was using the litter box. I began to use less and less paper around the litter box until there was none. Keep your puppy in a small area too, if she is able to run through the whole house, it will be a lot harder to get her to go in one spot. Once she uses the litter box without any paper around it, let her in a larger area until she can wonder through the whole house and still use the litter box. Also, I have 2 floors in my house, I have a litter box upstairs and downstairs, it makes it a lot easier on the puppy. Make sure the litter box is placed where you want to keep it from the beginning, it will be harder to change it later.
