The 1990 chrysler fifth avenue new yorker engine shuts down without any symptoms.  All other systems work, yet after a few minutes it starts, runs for an indeterminate amount of time then quits again.  Shop guys say to have it towed in so they can analyze it when its not running, such stupidity on their part is asinine as they have been told it will restart in just a few minutes.  My question is, what are the critcal electrical points which would do this?  Open to expert opinions.  thanks

I have had that problem also and it was the pick-up coil. I also had to replace the electronic fuel pump on a different occasion. When it was the fuel pump, as time went on it would take longer for the car to restart....sometimes 10 minutes. It would be easier for them to check first to see if it is the fuel pump.

I forced my Grandma in 1985 to buy a 1995 New Yorker Turbo FULLY LOADED. The car has every upgrade abd feature. From dual power leather seats to on board computer that can calculate MPG & more. Has the talking feature and the turbo. When I was a teenager there were not any cars on the road that could pass ne up that car was fast. I drove it last night for the 1st time since she passed away in 1996. It has been covered in the garage 70,000 miles on it. Changed the oil and juiced up the battery it started on the 1st turn of the key. And by the end of a long express way drive at 90/mpr the turbo and every feature still works like the day she bought it. I am amazed, it runs perfect still and lookes like new. Never a problem with elecsystem. My younger sister got our other granma's 1983,Chrysler New Yorker 5th Ave, White, blue leather was the Sunday car 95,000 miles on it again every option and upgrade. Car runs awsome (guzzles gas with the 318) I did put an electronic carb on it, it was running bad.  That is what it needed runds like new in mint condition.. No electical problems. ???? Just have to take care of them from the beggining.. Never talk back to the little man in the dash board he always says THANK YOU!! If he askes or tells U to do something... LOL Sorry just had to share my Chrysler story..

From experience, I say #1 - fuel pump, #2 electronic pickup.

If the car is 3 years old, you'd probably be best to start with the fuelpump. They get old, the brushes stick - one trick I've heard, but it's never worked for me, was to kick the gas tank a few times to jar the pump into starting.

If it isn't bad now, it will be, so the bill has to be paid someday.

Then comes the pickup in the distributor. Again, something that will go, as sure as it'll rain, but who knows when.

I have 4 vans, and I have a tested replacement distributor on hand just in case.

If you're handy, the easiest to change is the distributor - I'd get one from a wrecker, and do it myself. The fuel pump is a lot harder to change - it takes a shop several hours on a hoist - it's a days work in the back yard.

Don't buy a used one - there's no point cause if they work today, they may not tomorrow.

First analyze the problem by starting the engine, and wiggle the wiring loom that goes into the coil pack.  If it dies, you probably have a broken wire in the wiring loom.  You will need to find out which of the wires that needs to be replaced in the wiring loom.

For a quick but not permanent fix, push all the wires firmly under the coil pack, as firm as possible.  That should make a connection.  When your car stops again...  REPEAT.  WORKS FOR ME!!!  For nearly six months now.

I got a new wiring loom, just too lazy at this point to replace.  Waiting for it to quit on me again.  Hasn't happened yet.

Let me know.  Good luck.

My bright and dime headlamps will begin to intermittantly flash on and off when the high beams have been on for a couple of minutes. I have checked the relays, changed the dimmer switch, and checked all of the fuses that are related to the head lamps. What is wrong with my car?

i had the same/similar problem while i was driving from houston to cali.mine is equipped with an alarm system and i didn't know how to work it at the time.the system is a PATS(passive anti theftsystem) style alarm.I stopped to sleep and locked the car from the inside. When i woke up,I opened the door to stretch.I tried to start the car to leave again and it ran for a few seconds and quit.If you don't reset the alarm, the computer WILL NOT allow the car to stay running.I know the solution seems a little far fetched and dumb but it worked.I reset the alarm and it started right up and took me another 600 miles.Every little bit helps so try that,it might help.
