give your dog a place where it is okay to dig. For example a sandbox outside. Bury treats in the sandbox and encourage him to dig there. If the dog starts digging back on the rug then say "NO" firmly and either carry or walk the dog to the area you want the dog to dig that has the treats buried. This can take some time but eventually he should catch on. Also a quick fix is there are these mats that are sold at PetsMart that if stepped on it will produce a loud highpitched noise that should scare him and he will eventually learn that if he digs there then he will get scared by the startling noise. This may backfire if not done properly and for the most thourough and best results contact an animal behaviorist.
