Why does sound travel so much better downwind than upwind?

I think that the sound traveling upwind encounters resistance. Resistance in the form of other sound waves that are 180 degrees out of phase with the freqency of the sound wave being transmitted.  Those events cancell out some of the amplitude of the sound source. Not all the waves are cancelled out by identically opposing frequencies therefore some of them get deflected and get through anyway

Sound travels through the air in waves by the air molucules hitting into one another.  If the molucules in the air are traveling against the flow of the sound wave the sound effectively has to go farther and work harder to get there.  This is similar to the way air speed of a plane differs from its land speed.

When there is a wind, the air blowing nearer the ground is moving more slowly than that higher up, so there is a vertical velocity gradient. This causes the direction in which sound travels to curve: upwards for upwind, and downwards for downwind. So sound travelling upwind is deflected away from the ground, and gets lost, while sound travelling downwind curves down towards the ground, and get reinforced.

I think sound travels what ever direction it is projected. The vibration that distrubs the molcules only disturb the molecules that surround the vibration.

Sound travels fast downwind because the wind pushes the air molecules. This causes faster travel and loud sound. That is why if you are taking to someone against the wind their voice is quiet. It also causes you to here your on voice louder than usual.
