AIX 5.1 Trying to use rm -r *.DAT command for large number...

AIX 5.1 Trying to use rm -r *.DAT command for large number files and failed to do so with a message  "Unable to remove file ......too long". Is there a limit? I can delete files using rm -r ABC???????.??? but there also some kind of limitation as does not work all situation. I am trying to delete around 27000 files in one shot.
