If someone who has been diagnosed as a rapid-cycling bipolar is on Epival, should they still be having suicidal thoughts? Is there anything else that could be added (in terms of medication) to stabilize them?

I'm a rapid-cycler myself. From what I've read, SSRI'sare used in particular for (potentially) suicidal patients...Of course then you have to have something to counter it. I am on Effexor XR and Topomax and do the trick as long as I make sure to get enough sleep...otherwise I slip into another cycle. Hope this helps. Good luck!

i don't know when you posted, but i'vebeen told the best things for rapid cycling are anti convulsants (like topomax, etc) or anti pshychotics, and that anti depressents and lithium's can make it worse.

I have just been told I'm a rapid cycler.  But I pretty much guessed it anyway.  I take a mood stabiliser (Tegretol), Escitalopram (cipralex), anti-anxiety (Buspar) and anti-psychotic (chlorpromazine).  The SSRI keeps me up and slightly manic, although I have to agree if I don't get enough sleep the cycles keep on going.

The doctor said it depends on the type of cycles you have, if they are depressive then they prefer lithium and if they are manic they prefer anti-convulsants.  SSRI'sare only safe with either of these.  Hope this helps
