Carburation woes.

My '93 Ducati 750SS has a recurring problem of fouling sparkplugs after they have been in the bike for about 500kms.
Usually it will start running on one cylinder
until I clean or replace them.
The bike is standard apart from after market mufflers which are free flowing (noisy!) and probably provide less back pressure.
Would this affect the carburation?
I have lowered the jet needle one notch to lean things up a bit but this has not eliminated the problem.
Any ideas?

Try going up a jet size rather than lifting the needle. I've noted that mine runs smoother without ram air rubbers on top front of air box, but note you might have to go up another size again to take them off. Good luck!   I have carb icing problems, do you have any solutions??

I have heard that Silkolene Pro-FST helps loads. Going to try it in the next couple of weeks as my 600ss ices up like Mister Whippy.

My friend use to have also problems with the sparkplugs. He had special ones with a very smal electrode. I advised him to replace them with new ones with a normal electrode. After that the problem was solved

I have experienced similair problems with my 96 900 SS, mainly when starting after it had been sitting around for months without use.  After changing the idle jets (the jets the needle seat into) & polishing the stainless needles, it now cold starts easily, actually runs with the choke on when cold & the overall performance is back to where it should be.  Hope this fixes your problem too.

Answer to AlWeir, 09/16/2003 - fouling spark plugs: do you have problem on both cylinders or only on one?. How looks the plug after "fouling". More "smoke" out from exhaust of fouling spark cylinder side even spark is still not fouling?

Carb heater survives down to -15 C still air temps no problems. Thats the coldest I've done, I was a bit hypothermic but my 600SS was fine

Usually it's that the float height (fuel level) is too rich with the amount of wear on the needle jet orifice. Really common problem.

Here's a link to a page that you can get new needle jets (also called "emulsion tubes").
Good luck!

check the valve clearance as this will lower the compression and foul the plugs

I had the same problem.  I found there was a little moisture coming into the petrol tank and building also into the fuel floats.  Took it to a ducati dealer they readjusted the float level and cleaned out the carby with compressed air- cleaned out the fuel tank which had a bit of water in it. now it runs fine.  Now every 3rd or 4th tank i put a little metho into the tank which will mix the water with the metho and petrol.
