Hi. I have a Kawasaki kdx 200 dirt bike. When I pull the clutch lever in (while in gear when the bike is cold) it doesn't roll free, it stays in gear. If I start the bike in neutral and then pull the cluch lever in and put the bike into first gear it jumps like I'm not pulling in on the lever. After it warms up a bit, it works fine. When I shift or ride the bike, the clutch doesn't slip at all, it just takes a while for it to "loosen up" so that when I pull the lever in it rolls free. Any suggestions? Thanks, Doug

all kdx 200 and 220 do this. it might be due to the clutch springs. my sons kdx and all new kdx'shave this problem. i checked 4 bikes at various bike shops.

When you leave the bike standing, pull the clutch lever in and hold it there with a cable tie, strap or anything suitable. Leave it like that until you need to use the bike again and the clutch should work fine.

Take off the bolts on the clutch basket one at a time, when you put each basket bolt back in put 1 thin washer at the bolt head end , this stiffens the springs so clutch works , a old 1974 yamaha dt 100 trick.

my 2002kdx220 does not do that. do you have the correct type oil in the tranny? Use exactly what kawasaki says to use, and make sure it is at correct fill level. maybe they corrected problem on newer models.

your clutch is dragging this problem can happen with any bike with age the most likely answer is that your clutch basket is worn with notches and not letting the clutch to fully disengage these notches come over time from shock load caused by the clutch plates you can fix this by removing the basket and filing the notches off the basket fingers this will buy you some time from having to replace the basket but in time you will the draw back from this fix is that you will get more of a slap in the clutch I have had kdx,s for years and ride in the rockies with lots of shock load put on the drive train and only have replaced the basket one time

your problem is that your cluch cable has streched with time and is not pulling the cluch in all the way to wear it is likle the bike is in nutrul when you pull the cluch in. it is also that the cluch rings have not warmed up enough. thats why when you first start up the bike it jumps like you are not using the cluch when you put it in gear. just let the bike warm up before you put it in gear because if you start it up and just go without warming up the bike you can blow up your top end like that.

this is due to the lack of oil getting between the clutch plates.do not tie the clutch up over night as this places stress on the clutch springs.try a thicker oil ,there is no reason why you cant strip it.i am a trail guide working in wales, its not the bike thats fast but the rider, the kdx is the most reliable.

well i agree with some, and disagree with others.. i own a 2001 KDX 220R and i love it. One of my friends runs a CR 125 and his brother a RM 125.. i think they are both 2000's.. but any ways. We race on Q5 a track near where i live, and its close every time, I'm talking 10-20 feet.. the KDX is a very powerful bike and very reliable.. if you know how to ride it, you will go far as i have.

All bikes are good just depends what u want and what type of riding your doing. i'veridden sht loads some have more snap but wear u out quicker (a lot funner but) but through the bush i can hold or beat mates on KX 250 CR 125 KTM 525 YZ 425 XR 600 at the end of the day it’s the rider and conditions so get what you can use afford and like.  KDX'sare quick, smooth, well sprung and reliable (7 years from new not 1 problem) and rego'd the hose behind kick starter is case breather should be a hole up in air box it slips into, my bikes also done this clutch thing from new just the springs i don't mind havin to find neutral so niether should you.

A KDX IS THE NEXT BEST THING TO A MOTOCROSSER. I'M GLAD THAT A HONDA CR 250

ALRIGHT....I HAVE READ JUST ABOUT ENOUGH OF YOUR BAD ADVICE. THE PROBLEM IS THE ACTUAL CLUTCH BASKET AND THE CLUTCH PLATES. THEY ARE SIMPLY WORN. THE ALUMINUM BASKET HAS DEVELOPED WEAR GROOVES IN THE SPLINES WHICH KEEP THE FIBER AND METAL CLUTCH PLATES FROM RELEASING PROPERLY. YOUR MODEL YR DOESN'T HAVE A QUICK CLUTCH COVER LIKE THE MX LINE SO ITS A BIT MORE TIME TO FIX. DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND GET A FACTORY MANUAL. YOU CAN FILE THE SPLINES...LIGHTLY!!! JUST TO DE-BURR THEM, THEN DROP IN A NEW PLATE SET AND ALTERNATE IN THREE CLUTCH REPLACEMENT SPRINGS FROM A KX 250. THIS WILL GIVE YOU A PROPERLY WORKING CLUTCH AND INCREASED CLAMPING FORCE TO BLOW THOSE HONDAS AWAY.

Perhaps, you might not have a mechanical problem after all. If I read you question correctly, it seems that you are trying to start you bike 'in gear' when it's cold.(Cold meaning not having run in the last 4 hours) You should always start a cold bike in neutral and let it warm up for at least, 30 to 40 seconds before snicking it into gear. If the bike works OK by using this method then there is no clutch problem. You just need to use the proper startup procedure. If,when you try this method and the bike jumps and dies  the first time that you put it into gear (but operates fine after that) then  this problem is occurring because the many plates in the clutch basket are sticking together... There are multiple clutch plates that are stacked in a bowl shaped, metal case called a basket. The plates are squeezed together by several springs. Some of the plates have notches on their outsides and some have notches on the inside. These notches fit into groves in the clutch basket. The "outer' plates are directly connected to the crankshaft and the "inner' plates are connected to the transmission.   Between the "inner" plates (usually steel) and the "outer" plates (usually fiber) there are either steel wavy washers or rubber rings.  Their job is to push the clutch plates apart when the spring tension is removed (done by pulling in the clutch lever on the handlebar) If these are damaged or missing then (after being parked for a while)the clutch plates will "stick" together.  With a cold bike, you should always start it in neutral, then put it in first gear. If the plates are stuck, the bike will jump and die, even though the clutch lever is pulled in.  If when you restart the bike and everything operates fine then the clutch has 'broken free'  The "problem" is the clutch plate spreaders.(wavy or rubber) Replacing these with new ones will cure the this behavior.    If the clutch ALWAYS does not disengage or engage properly then there are other issues such as a worn basket, or linkage adjustment
As for oil, this is not generally the cause of clutch problems. (but type F always made my race bike clutches so smooth and it's cheap)  Hope that this helped. Rexerbo

Easy way to solve it is to add about a cup of dish washing detergent into your gear oil. It acts as a super lubricating fluid and you will never have the problem again.

The bike shops will tell you different but they just want your money. DO IT AND SEE!

skag racer,i have to agree with you.my 91 was stalling in gear.there were notches worn in the fingers that kept the plates from separating when the lever released the spring pressure.i filed the basket and flipped the outboard plates and the problem went away.it beat the crap out of buying a new basket.to all the people who are slamming a particular brand of bike...the machine is an extension of the rider.whatever attitude you bring to preparing to ride and to riding shows.a good rider can win on any contemporary machine,if he is prepared and the machine is prepared.

Yeah my KDX200 just started shifting without ease. Im going 2 take it into a shop and see if the springs are bad or the cable is stretched.Ill try to remember to post the outcome. And of course a Honda CR125 would beat a KDX200 on the track. They have totally different gear ratios and powerbands. They are made to take on different types of terrain. Thats like comparing an rock crawler truck to a McLaren F1. JEEZE

do not, do not run automatic transmission fluid in your kdx. it will void warranty(there is a reason that it will void it)
if your bike is jumping like that it could be that you need to adjust your clutch springs or that its worn

Hey I would suggest that you check the    clutch springs. Get the right type of tranny oil. And after that always let it warm up thuraly before you go ride at all.
And if that doesn't work buy a
              (YAMAHA)
Yamaha's are proven to have the longest lasting motors the are out on the market to day. The main reason for that is because the have been around the longest Hondas just came out with the CRF's so they still have some things to work on them.
The new Yamaha's have Exel Rims, triple clamps, Renthal bars, ect. And all of it comes stock so buy a Yamaha.

All KDX'sare known to do this, even more recent bikes.  Your best bet is to let the bike warm up.  The tell tale sign is if you put it into gear with the clutch in with no gas and the bike bogs out, your gear oil has yet to warm up.  15 minutes should be plenty, if not look into a new clutch further down the road.

The person who advised Re-working the
clutch basket fingers nailed it.
Due to wear {shock} to the basket, small
wave like indentions are caused.
These wave-like formations keep the clutch
from properly operating....Simple fix is
to remove the basket and file down the "waves...I would also change all the
plates just to freshen things up......

Let's keep in mind here we are talking about KAWASAKI kdx 200 and kdx 220....Not some crap you ride that you removed the clutch system and love it...But real people who want to ride a killer bike..And try to make it better....CR"s Ktm, there all great,But where talking about Kawasaki....

Hey guys: one question. When you're 14 u can get a license to ride a dirt bike legally on the road, correct? In doing so you buy a road legalization kit. This includes lights, turning signals, etc. But if your bike goes fast enough, could I ride it on the highway?

I have a KX 100, It did the same thing, i had pro circuit overhaul my whole engine, so yeah no more problem, but if ur on a budget, dont worry about it, if you cant wait for your bike to warm up, then get an electric scooter, somtimes problems cant be fixed thou, on older bikes its always a battle, a rekluse auto clutch would take care of it thou, only good for enduro/trail + lil bit a slow motion wheelys TERRIBLE FOR TRACK
