Indexed sequential files are also called indexed files whose records are first inserted sequentialy by use of key(index) in ascending order, but updated , deleted and retrived randomly with the use of index .for this a index table is maintained,u can imagine a dictionary where to find "sangram' u have to use index S then in S u will sequentially go to search "Sangram" .  Thats why indexed sequential.its as simple as that

Index Sequential File are basically files which maintain an Index for faster retrieval of data. With every row an Index number is assigned so that it can be uniquely identified.
