WILEY B. PEPPER, M. D., an old practitioner of medicine, and now a druggist of Lynnville, Tenn., is a native of Robertson County, Tenn., born near Springfield April 13, 1821, son of William C. and Sarah (Powell) Pepper, and is of English extraction. His father was a native of Virginia, and came to Tennessee with his parents in 1808. The family first settled where Nashville now stands, but later removed to Robertson County, and since then the Pepper family has figured prominently in the affairs of Robertson County, and there the parents of our subject deceased. Dr. Pepper's early life was spent on the farm. He received a liberal education at the Springfield schools, and began the study of medicine in l844, graduating from the Memphis Medical College in 1849, and the following year located in Giles County, where he continued his profession two years. He then removed to Limestone County, Ala., where he remained until 1865, and just after the surrender of Lee at Appomattox he returned to his native county, and there lived five years, and in 1870 came to Lynnville, continuing the practice of his profession about six months, and then engaged in the drug business, which he has since continued. He was married in 1853, to Miss Sarah E. Horwell, of Giles County. He was formerly an "old-line" Whig, but is now a Democrat, and was made a Mason in 1850. They are leading members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and he is an honorable citizen.

And that about sums it all up...

That should clear it up. Yes it was invented in Waco, tx in 1885. No, it was not invented by Wade Morrison, but rather Charles Alderton. Morrison was his boss. Morrison is credited with the Name Dr Pepper, but according to the site, his inspiration is unknown.

Charles Alderton invented Dr Pepper in 1885, and it was called the "Waco" by the customers. he worked at "Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store" where Morrison (the owner) named it after his friend Dr. Pepper. the period (.) in Dr"." Pepper was removed sometime in the 1900's because it was in italics so it looked like D: Pepper.

Dr Pepper was invented by Charles Curtis Alderton. He was schooled in England then worked in Waco, Texas at Morrison's Old Corner Drug store. Customers became tired of the same drinks so Charles Alderton invented his own recipes for soft drinks and Dr. Pepper became very popular.

Inventor. Born in Brooklyn, New York to British immigrants, he went to England after his early education, where he attended a college in Stowmarket. He returned to Brooklyn during the Westward Expansion, and attended medical school at the University of Texas in Galveston, Texas. Graduating with an M.D., he decided to work as a pharmacist, moving to Waco, Texas to join W. B. Morrison in his Old Corner Drug Store. He soon noticed that patrons of the soda fountain soon were tired of the standard fountain flavors. He confirmed this by his own taste experiments which led him to concoct a series of mixtures to find a more original drink. After exhaustive testing of combinations of fruit extracts from the fountain, he finally hit upon one that was particularly pleasing. Carefully measuring the different syrups and fine tuning the product as he went, he invited Morrison to try his new drink, which Morrison loved. When the product as offered to their fountain patrons as a test, the reaction was overwhelming. Charles Alderton'sdrink caught on fast and soon customers were asking for "Doc Alderton'sdrink." Morrison came up with the name for it, naming it “Dr. Pepper”, after the father of a girl he had once courted. After 100 years the soda is still much the same product Charles Alderton created, and is one of the most popular sodas today.

Many Americans love the rewarding flavor of Dr. Pepper. Dr. Pepper is Americas oldest soft drink. It was created in 1885 in Waco Texas. A clever young pharmacist named Charles Alderton came up with this original taste.

Dr. Pepper was first spotted at Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store. Charles Alderton worked there usually mixing up medicine for the customers but in his spare time he served drinks from the soda fountain to the store customers.  Charles recorded that he always loved the smell of the store because of all the fruit syrups mixed together. Charles Alderton tried many experiments to make a drink that smelt like the air in the store. After many experiments he came up with the perfect mixture of fruit syrups. Soon after his experiments he offered his drink to the owner of the drug store; Mr. Morrison. Of course, like many other Americans Morrison liked the flavor. The two decided to sell there drinks at the fountain. Their drink became very popular in Waco. People already started naming is “Waco.”

Morrison was credited for naming the product. It is said that he named it after one of his friends. Charles Alderton was more interested in his pharmacy work than in his drink so he suggested that Robert Lazenby and Morrison develop it further. Lazenby was the owner of Ginger Ale and a beverage chemist.

Morrison and Robert started a new firm called the Artesian Manufacturing and Bottling Company. This firm later became known as the Dr. Pepper Company. Within a couple years just Robert Lazenby and his son-in-law J.B O’Hara owned the Dr. Pepper Company. By 1904 over twenty million people had tried Dr. Pepper.

In 1910 Dr. Pepper got its first slogan. The slogan was “King of Beverages.” Its trademark was a picture of a doctor with a top hat on. That trademark was around the 1920’s and 1930’s. Near the 50’s the slogan became “the friendly pepper upper.”

By 1923 Lazenby and O’Hara moved the Dr pepper Company to Dallas Texas. By doing this they expanded the amount of customers. Other company’s that made Dr. Pepper developed over the years. A few of these companies are Dublin Dr. Pepper, Temple Bottling Company, West Jefferson Dr. Pepper, and ABTEX Bottling.
