A tropical storm is ussually smaller than a hurricane. It has lower wind speed and does not travel as fast. A hurricane is smaller than a tornado but larger than a tropical storm. It has wind speed that can travel over 75 miles per hour. It is also a lot more dangerous.

A Tropical Storm is different then a hurricane because Tropical storms do damage but not as much as a hurricane dose.I agree with  about the miles that a hurricane travels but not with how wide the hurricane being 350 miles.  Hurricanes are different from Tropical Storms because hurricanes have categories but Tropical Storms don't.

A tropical storm is usually smaller than a hurricane. It has lower wind speed and does not travel as fast. A hurricane is larger than a tornado and is also larger than a tropical storm. It has wind speed that can travel over 75 miles per hour. A tropical storm causes more damage, though. A hurricane can be 350 miles wide with wind speeds of up to 175 mph.

Tropical Storms start above water and lose energy when they hit land.  Tornadoes are made on land and get their energy from land.

A hurricane is smaller than a tornado but larger than a tropical storm.  A hurricane starts out as a tropical storm and as it grows can become a hurricane.  A hurricane has winds of over 74 miles per hour.  They norrmally form in the southern Atlantic Ocean,Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and the eastern Pacific Ocean

poki is wrong about tropical storms doing more damage. although she is right a hurricane is a lot bigger than a tornado

a hurricane hits faster and does a lot more damage although we give warnings some just don't have the time to pack and get out

normally it is very hard to determine the wind speed or intensity of a hurricane
that was the problem of hurricane Katrina

Here is the information about hurricane in website hurricane preparedness, maybe could answer your question.

What is a Hurricane?
A hurricane is a type of tropical cyclone, which is a generic term for a low pressure system that generally forms in the tropics. The cyclone is accompanied by thunderstorms and, in the Northern Hemisphere, a counterclockwise circulation of winds near the earth's surface. Tropical cyclones are classified as follows:

* Sustained winds
A 1-minute average wind measured at about 33 ft (10 meters) above the surface.

** 1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour or 1.15 statute miles per hour. Abbreviated as "kt".

Tropical Depression
An organized system of clouds and thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and maximum sustained winds* of 38 mph (33 kt**) or less

Tropical Storm
An organized system of strong thunderstorms with a defined surface circulation and maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph (34-63 kt)

Hurricane
An intense tropical weather system of strong thunderstorms with a well-defined surface circulation and maximum sustained winds of 74 mph (64 kt) or higher

a tropical storm is when the winds are between 39-73 miles per hour. a hurricane is when the winds are above 74 miles per hour. therefore, hurricanes will be more likely to create more damage. i disagree w/ poki b/c she said that hurricanes r not more powerful and harmful then tropical storms. i think they r, b/c since the winds r faster, its mostly the winds that do all the damage, therefore hurricanes will most likely do more damage. it still is possible that tropical storms can be more harmful, but a lot less likely.

Actually, hurricanes and tornados shouldn't be compared directly because both require completely different specific things to occur for them to take place.  The main difference between a hurricane and a tornado is that the hurricane is out over the ocean ("tropical").  That's why, although they still cause damage on land, hurricanes weaken once they hit land and eventually completely go away (or at least dissipate until they are just thunderstorms again).  Tornados form on land.  They occur when low and high pressure systems cross paths.

Hurricanes and tropical storms are in the same category (both are considered tropical cyclones) with the difference being intensity (wind speeds).  For a tropical cyclone to form and grow into a hurricane, there must be some pre-existing weather disturbance (i.e. a thunderstorm), ocean temps must be at least 80 degrees F down to around 150 feet, and relatively light winds at the lower levels of the atmosphere.  The first stage of a tropical cyclone is a tropical depression (38 mph or less winds), the second stage is a tropical storm (39-73 mph winds), and the third is a hurricane (74 mph or more winds).  Then there are different categories of hurricanes from 1-5 with 1 being the least intense (74-95 mph winds) and 5 being the most intense (156 mph winds or more).  Hurricanes are typically around 300 miles wide although they can be bigger or smaller.  As far as the size of a tornado, poki is right, tornados are much smaller than hurricanes.  In fact, most tornados are around 110-120 feet or less.  A 1 mile wide tornado is considered extremely large and rare.  As for damage, some of the smaller storms can cause the most damage.  Size and wind speed are not enough to predict the amount of damage a storm will cause.  There really isn't a way to predict this.  A smaller, less intense storm could cause more damage than a bigger, more intense storm depending on the direction it hits a location.  Thanks.
