WARNING: SPOILER

In the great John Ford classic, James Stewart is known by all as "the man who shot liberty valance" and immediately after the gunfight, it is clear that he himself thinks that he shot Lee Marvin.  However, in a private conversation later in the film, John Wayne tells James Stewart, that it was him, John Wayne, who shot Liberty from the shadows.  So, while everyone in the world thinks that James Stewart is 'the man' and refer to him as such, if John Wayne was telling the truth, it was John Wayne who was the one who actually shot Liberty.
