Are golden retrievers okay to be left alone during the work day (8-5)?

Hi Melanie,

It really depends on the age of the dog.  I wouldn't leave a puppy all day from 8-5.  They really need to be let out during the day and fed often. (3 x's day)

An adult golden (at least 1 yr old) can be left during the day, provided they get sufficient exercise before and after your work day.  A nice long walk and good run will keep them happy.
Goldens are an active dog and need lots of exercise to release their energy.  Without the proper exercise, even an adult dog will get into all kinds of mischief during the day.  And will be impossible to live with.

Get a doggy door, or hire a puppy walker, or enlist a nieghbor and trade chores.  Also, get many interesting toys, musicical or wobbly, anything to get him interested and change them around a lot.  Leave TV on animal channel, honest, it has worked for us.  We have a happy girl, and we both work 40 hrs a week.
