"Danseur" is listed as a "male ballet dancer"
in:
The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language
WordNet ® 1.6, © 1997 Princeton University
Merriam Webster's Unabridged Dictionary
but "ballarino" has no listing, nor does it
translate in any French-English or Italian-English dictionaries I can find.

Based on a bunch of computer research of the above answers:

Danseur and Ballerino are both correct.  [To the individual who said it isn't a word, that may be.  But words are based on the history of their usage, not on what any individual, group, or organization decides what a word should, or shouldn't, be.  And the word Ballerino is in common enough usage it has become a word.

On the other hand,

balletomane is an ardent admirer of the ballet

balladeere is a misspelling of either:

Balladeer - a singer of ballads
or
Ballader - a writer of ballads.

:-)

Ballerina is Italian for female ballet dancer.  Ballerino is Italian for male ballet dancer.  I would not start mixing French with Italian - stick to one language and accept Ballerino as the appropriate male equivalent.  If it's not in your dictionary, you don't have an Italian dictionary.  The French spelling is Ballerine.

ballarino was used in 1581 in Italy and is a male dancer of ballet (which comes from a Latin based word for dance) and the word ballerina preceded it slightly. The word ballerina did not make it into the English language until 1792.

To present the idea it is not in a dictionary and therefore not a word, would mean SPAM is not a word.

Words are added to language all the time. Ask any lexicographer. If you are going to use the word ballerina (f) then ballarino (m) would be correct.

Ballerina is Italian for female ballet dancer, ballerino is Italian for male ballet dancer.
Danseuse is French for a female dancer, danseur is French for a male dancer.
As you can see the word 'ballerina' in  English is a loanword from Italian.

if we accept danseur as french masculine for feminine danseuse, why not accept ballerino as italian masculine for feminine ballerina?  It seems quite logical... however a tendency to favor french over italian leads people to be pretentious by saying "danseur" which most don't pronounce correctly anyway.  Personally if ballerino is unacceptable to most I would go with common usage.... which is ballerina/ballet dancer.  Incidentally, the term "ballerina" came into English usage at a time when Italy was the leader in the world of ballet.

Ballerino is the Italian.

It's only starting to gain currency in English.  For those of you who scream and cry that it's not in the dictionary, consider this:

The word "ninja" was not in Webster's Unabridged Dictionary until well into the 90's, iirc, well after the ninja craze of the 80's.  Presumably they still considered the word still to be Japanese until that time.

This is the way English works.  It picks up new words all the time.  Whether or not a given word is justifiably English yet is often a gray question.  No one can say for sure, but it seems likely that "ballerino" will eventually be accepted, since it is readily understood.

Ballerina is an Italian word, from the root ballo.  Since Italian is a language with gender specifics, the standard masculine conjugation of Ballerina is Ballerino.  The French, unhappy accepting the words of another language, began using their own words, danseur (male) and danseuse (female), because they're pricks like that.  So, in short, you're all right, and all retarded.

Better late than never - There seems to be some confusion between French and Italian here.

Ballerina is the Italian word for a female dancer (the final a showing it's female). Therefore the correct Italian word for a male dancer is Ballerino (the o being masculine).

The French went their own way with Danseur and Danseuse for male and female respectively.

Ballerino is the Italian male version of Ballerina.  Danseur is French, which English stole...same thing with stealling "ballerina" from Italian.  Both are the male version of words for "ballet dancer" in the original language, and therefore both correct.  Personally, I know a little French and no Italian, so I prefer the French.  Since both are right, it doesn't matter.

ballerina is Italian for dancer (female gender) ballerino is Itallian for dancer (male gender).  Danseuse is French for dancer (female gender) danseur is French for dancer (male gender). English has addopted ballarina specifically for ballet dance. You can use dancer, male ballet dancer, ballerino or danseur, whatever tickles your fancy!

well..male ballet dancers do have many names..i have never heard of ballerino..however aint is now in the dictionary..think about that. besides a ballet was orginaly a court performance including singing and dancing for king louis the 16 or 14. i dont remember. Also at some point in history a female dancer had to earn the title ballerina..there were three levels, ballerina, prima ballerina, and prima ballerina asoluta (I believe)..which I also believe was only ever given to Margot Fontaine by the queen of england...i think..i could be wrong.
