The actual island they showed for the island scenes was off the coast of Florida. However, most of this highly subtle and intellectual comedy was filmed in Southern California

From looking at the opening intro footage my guess is the scene with the S.S. Minnow leaving port is somewhere in the Florida Keys...I think the Island is also somewhere in the Keys

The  Island shown, is indeed off Oahu,..it is called coconut island. As for the scene in the first episode, where the minnow is on the beach.....that was filmed in Malibu, and the palm trees are fake. The rest of the show was filmed at CBS studios.

According to Sherwood Schwartz on the comments from the 1st disk of the Season 1 DVD, the shipwreck scene was on an island in the Hawaiian chain (sorry, but I forget the actual name), and he mentions how difficult it was to find an island with no cars, highways, electrical lines, etc.  The picture of the island from a distance during the credits is another island, if I remember correctly.  I'll have to rent the DVD again to get all the info.

Might also interest you to know he mentions the scene in the beginning where the SS Minnow is sailing through the harbor - in the distant background is a flag at half-mast.  This scene was taken shortly after JFK was shot.

I highly recommend the DVD series - watch the pilot episode with the comments on.

The season 1 DVD "special features" does indeed state it is Coconut Island.  I've seen it, just off of Kaneohe Bay on Oahu, and it does seem to fit the general dimensions.  Of course, this is just for the opening and closing credits.  The majority was filmed in a studio.

GILLIGAN'S ISLAND was shot on CBS'sStudio City lot in the Valley, four or five miles away from what is actually Hollywood. The back-lot island lagoon (four feet deep with a working waterfall) has since been dismantled. Everything else was filmed indoors on Soundstage 2 with one camera and no audience. The pilot for the series was filmed on the island of Kauai in Hawaii at Moloaa Bay. Actual outdoor scenes were a combination of Hawaiian Island shots and footage taken at Zuma Beach near Malibu in southern California. The island seen in the show's establishing shots is Coconut Island, one of Hawaii's tiniest, located in Kaneohe Bay on the northeast shore of Oahu.

It is in the Bahamas...I lived in Nassau for three and a half years.  And for all you oldies - Flipper was filmed there, as well as the New Flipper with Elijah Woods.  You can still snorkle and dive the "Porpoise Pens".

Closing credit island is Napali Beach on Fanning Island, part of the Republic of Kiribati. It is due south of the island of Kauai, 3 degrees north of the equator. Although south of Kauai, they operate a day ahead since the capital of Kiribati is west of the international date line. (I was there 10 days ago on a cruise. :-P )

The opening scene which shows a very small island in the distance is in fact a small island in the Bahamas, Salt Cay.  The other island scenes are an island in HI, Coconut Island.  Of course, most of the footage is Hollywood, CA!

If you want the right answers about Gilligan's Island go to the following web site. Bob was a friend of our community and a great person. Look at the bottom of the web page and you will see the Island in the picture at the end of the show is Coconut Island in Kaneohe bay in Hawaii but the pilot was filmed on the Island of Kauai in Hawaii. The rest on a CBS lot in Ca. Bob answered most of these on his web site. Again, He was a great person. I know because I had dealings with him personaly.

I recently took a cruise to the Florida Keys and Nassau,Bahamas. While in the Bahamas we took one of those Harbor tours and were told that the island used to film the the "island view" for Gilligan's Island was indeed a small island near the famous Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island,Bahamas.
We took pics of the island and it does look exactly the same.
It seems there have been alot of movie scenes shot near that area.
Some scenes from The Blue Lagoon(Brook Shields) were shot on location near there
as well as a Sean Connery flic. (we toured both these areas as well and have the pics).
B-U-T........These tour guides may just fabricate this information to add spice to the tour.....who knows???????????? I still tell people I got to see Gilligan's Island though!
