Two comments.  (1) I'm amazed that you came here to ask that question instead of just pulling up www.yahoo.com and typing in [horse "Neverending Story"]  Well, you got the answer, but MAN! did you go about it the long way!!!!  and (2) to add to the comment above about the horse dying.  At first I thought he was just joking, but sure enough, he's right!  There was a posting (in the quick list that shows up from the Yahoo search, ahem!) that asks the question: "[Why is it that] when Atreyu first sets out on his quest, his horse Artax is grey with a dark mane and a dark tail, but when they stop to rest and eat by the stream, Artax is now white with a white mane and a white tail. Then, by the end of the film, when Bastian and Falkor fly over Fantasia, they spot Atreyu and Artax and his mane and tail are both dark again."  And the answer given was that the first horse actually died during the filming of the movie.  They had problems on the set, and when Artax sank in the swamp of sadness ... the horse actually did sink, and died!  A second horse was brought in to complete the remaining scenes!  Amazing!  I had no idea.

The horse's name was Artax. In real life, they had to train the horse for four months for the scene when it drowns in mud.

The horses name was Artas. It died when the hoist, designed to raise and lower it in the mud of the 'swamp' failed. Noah Hathaway, who played Atrayu in the film, was so upset that filming was halted for 2 weeks before he was able to continue.

Actually Romey is right, it's Artax.  It sounds like "tex" but if you read the book it's "tax."
